Re: Time for a timing belt?
Is it an oem looking NGK? I swear no one ever changed the god damn plugs in these things! They are NGK's but look the same as the ones I'm putting in. 248000 km so I imagine they've been changed. If you haven't, before pulling the plugs use compressed air to blast out any debris around the them. He...

Re: Time for a timing belt?
Started the job after supper this evening. Rad out, top cover off and the old belt is a Nissan OEM. Not new but not worn or damaged. I've got the new parts so I'll be changing it. So far I've removed one spark plug. Rusty hex but it came out with no drama. Hope the others are the same. Rad support i...

Re: Time for a timing belt?
:) hey no worries. I'm enjoying the topic. Regarding my belt job---waiting for the parts from the excited states of America. Supposed to arrive before the end of the month. Then I'll have to wait for a half decent weekend as I'll be doing the job in my driveway. (my so called garage is too small, to...

Re: Time for a timing belt?
Ordered the kit from Rockauto in the states. Added a quality thermostat and the total after changing the money including shipping, tax and duty is $147.72 Cdn. Delivery is supposed to be by the end of the month. I'd prefer to shop local but I can't justify a one hundred dollar difference for the exa...

Re: Time for a timing belt?
Thanks Sandor and Adam. Did some pricing, local Napa can get the Gates set with the pump and tensioner- my cost $206 plus tax. The exact same kit, (same part number etc) from Rockauto in the states is $135 Cdn including shipping, no tax unless it gets dinged with duty at the border. I order a fair a...

Re: Time for a timing belt?
Ok, so what is the feeling about OEM vs after market parts? Both Dayco and Gates offer belts and kits including the water pump and tensioner. And both companies produce decent products as far as my experience goes but I've never used either for a timing belt. And; I understand while there I should r...

Re: Time for a timing belt?
I agree that it should have been done by now and the rest of the truck looks like it was owned by someone who cared enough to keep up on routine maintenance. And with one owner from new till 2015 you'd think it would be done. BUT, (and its a big but) I don't know. I know its not a huge job and not o...

Re: Time for a timing belt?
Thanks for the replies. I know the consequences of letting it go too far. I was hoping there might be some way to sneak in there and get a look at the condition without totally doing the job. The truck appears to have been well looked after and there are tell tale signs that the rad has been out bef...

Time for a timing belt?
I think I know the answer but I'm going to ask anyhow... Is there any way to inspect the timing belt on my '02 SE SC Xterra without actually tearing it down? I have a cheap borescope if that helps. I recently bought it from a used vehicle dealer so no background info. It has 249000k's. I've tried to...

Re: Roof rust
All good advice. I'll let you know how it turns out. Probably get a start on it next week. In the meantime I've fixed the key fob, (was missing the battery), changed the oil and filter, fixed the trailer light connector and installed the basket I bought off Lucas. All small stuff but I'm having fun....

Re: Roof rust
Thanks for the help guys. There are two spots on the rear door sills as well. I think I'll tackle them first. I ordered a Napa color matched to the paint code spray bomb today. I'll see how good the match is there and decide about the roof. I know there will be less fade inside the door than on the ...

Roof rust
My new to me 2002 Xterra SE SC has seven spots of rust on the roof. Just blistered surface spots about 2-3 inches around. But I want to look after them before winter. I am toying with the idea of removing the rust, scuffing the whole roof and applying bed liner or similar. The truck is yellow so a f...

Re: New member in northern Ontario
Thanks for the welcome everyone. Yep, I'm about 10 miles from beautiful downtown Espanola. I work with Lucas, (forget his forum name but lots of you know him and Darcy). I should also say that my first passion is old motorcycles, 1970's two strokes etc. (hence my forum name although I think most of ...

New member in northern Ontario
Hi all. After lurking here for a couple of weeks I'm ready to say hello. I was waiting until I actually owned a Nissan truck before posting. And today I picked up a 2002 Xtrerra SE SC. I've been watching kijiji and auto trader for a couple of months. Comparing and viewing and asking and learning. Pu...
