@Miner - if you need or want me to pick something up then order it online for an in store pickup. Me or anyone else could pick it up for you. We can hand over the parts at the Christmas party (after a vigorous testing of course...lol)
A few people on NPORA run that winch and they seem to like it from what I've read. I think it would be just fine for the xterra or in my case a pathy. Then again I'm a n00b when it comes to winches. I know the pathy (mine on the scales) weighs around 3900 with me in it.

I don't "need" it but I really want it!

The common understanding is that you want a winch that is capable of handling twice the weight of your truck.

8000lbs is essentially the lowest rating that is commonly recommended for our vehicles.

As Adam noted, his truck weighs 3900lbs with him in it. I'm sure mine weighs at least that, and more with the mods that I have. Lots of extra heavy steel on mine, so I'm sure mine's likely close to 5000lbs.

At the moment, I have a dead 8000lbs winch on the front of the truck. I used it once attempting a recovery, and it died. I've never tried to fix it, never used it since.

Anyways, point is that although the 8000lbs winch will do the job in most cases, most prefer to step up to something with just a bit more power because you aren't only factoring the weight of the vehicle. You also have to factor in where the stuck vehicle is.

Mud likes to hold on to trucks, so you occasionally need a bit more oompf for the extraction.

Using a snatch block effectively doubles the pulling power of the winch so if you had a snatch block an 8,000 lb winch should be enough if you really want that particular winch...

^^^ This. Pezzy has a Warn M8000 on her truck, and it's been good. No issues, plenty of power, but it's not a "budget" winch like the Superwinch. As Jim said, though, use a snatch block, and you won't stress the winch too much, and it'll likely give you years of reliable service.

Is a snatch block like a double pulley system?

It is always good to over-size the general rule if you can. Say double the weight of the vehicle plus 10%. At least the winch is not trying to run at its max.

Like other products each company likely rates their winches differently (no common rules). Cheaper companies may rate it for the max it can handle but better brands may rate theirs differently such as for normal usage as opposed to max usage.

The snatch doubles up the line. Think Newton. Slows down your pull in speed by half, but doubles the load capacity.

Generally a single pulley, like the one on the right in this picture:

Half the load goes to the winch itself, the other half to a fixed point such as your bumper or a tree.

You guys are light weights. With the small tires, no spare, a full tank and me in the truck its 6,000lbs. I think my cheap champion is a 9000, but it's always done the job. I had 8000 or 8500 Warns fail to get me out.
