Ethanol is a plant based fuel that's high in octane. The difference is that there is less power in Ethanol (about 2/3 less) then there is in regular Gasoline, so while it raises the octane level in fuel which is of course better for vehicles using high compression and or forced induction to induce a cleaner and more efficient burn, you lose on power because your fuel contains ;ess energy. But Ethanol is cheaper then oil-based fuels, so by adding Ethanol it lowers the price and cost of fuel, so while it makes less power and you lose efficiency, your suppose to come ahead because of the cheaper cost.

E85 contains up to 85 Ethanol. You lose 30% efficiency, but it's only about 15% cheaper over Premium fuel. However Premium fuel sits normally around 91 Octane, while E85 is around 105-110 Octane, almost race gas.

Response from Petro Canada (Suncor). It's interesting that it depends on the station, so I assume the different stations are supplied from different blending plants.

Thank you for contacting Petro-Canada Customer Service online.

We apologize for the delay in our reply.

In Ontario, Petro-Canada stations that only offer 3 grades of gasoline, (RegularClean 87 Octane (E-10 Regular), Plus Clean 89 Octane (E-5 Midgrade) and SuperClean 91 Octane), the SuperClean 91 will not contain ethanol.

At stations with 4 grades of gasoline (RegularClean 87 Octane (E-10 Regular), Plus Clean 89 Octane (E-5 Midgrade) and SuperClean 91 Octane, and Ultra 94 Octane), all grades will contain ethanol.

Best regards,

I think they oops'd or the stations with 4 grades actually offer only ethanol. I am pretty sure the 94 contains ethanol...it's octane is cheaply boosted by ethanol despite the steep price for it.

I cannot see why they would have 91 with and without ethanol...this is probably the oops...it either does or does not.

My guess is that Pure 91 doesn't have Ethanol. 87 and 94 do have it. The grades between are blended at each station.

I had heard of top-tier a while back (maybe not with that label), so I found this an interesting thread to follow.

Something that just came into my inbox - Pennsylvania has legislation proposing the removal of the ethanol requirement in gasoline, so it's definitely starting to get government attention.

There's a Simpson's quote for that.
