"The South"

Post by buttsy »

Well folks, the time has come for me to come in out of the cold. I have accepted a position in Toronto, and I start training March 19th. I'll be leaving Flight Services behind and moving into the Air Traffic Control world at Terminal Specialty (Pearson arrival and departure) otherwise known as TRACON for any American types in the audience. If you have ever seen the movie Pushing Tin, I'll be doing exactly that. In fact that was filmed at the Toronto Area Control Centre before the renos. Not that I'm one to push John Cusack movies mind you. Though Grosse Point Blank was a great flick, and so was High Fidelity. Actually War Inc springs to mind as well... Screw it, I'm now one to push John Cusack movies. Moral of the story you'll get to see more of me, so my apologies in advance. On that note: good exhaust shop within an hour's drive of Pearson? Need to get ready to pass that eTest thing you in the South love so much (ya hippies).

Awesome!

Are you trying to get the Xterra to pass? If so all it needs to have is no codes (though knock sensor is okay). They don't do the tailpipe sniff test for emissions anymore.

^true on ‘99 and newer. I believe 88-98 are still sniffed.

I DO have the X, and yes that's the one that needs to pass... Codes are ok, but I can't believe they would pass a vehicle that barely has exhaust behind the rear cats, and no muffler at all...
On that note: headers with full aftermarket stainless exhaust a pass? I have the headers, just need the rest

Also: not ready for the people. Mostly because I generally despise people, especially in groups. Takes a special sort to make it into my spend time with list

Yes there is also a visual inspection. All original emission parts must be present.

Ya Toronto is a tough place, too many Wynne supporters.

By original emissions equipment do you mean front and rear cats? Cause that could be an issue

Great news...maybe :p Bringing the whole clan down with you? Where are you planning to move? In our neighborhood (in the boonies) there is a pilot from Air Canada and a Aircraft Mechanic from West Jet. So it is a nice place to be when you want to be away from people but still close enough to commute; they leave at some god-awful hour for their shifts and miss the traffic.

For emissions, I did not realise they still did the sniff test. They may have changed the rules for sniff test since I had the frontier tested. It had headers, cheaters and missing the front cats. It failed emissions when hot. Went for visual check and they wrote up that it needed the front cats and gave me a conditional. Not sure if conditional passes are still allowed.

Yeah, I'm a live in the middle of no where kinda guy. How middle of no where depends on swinging the veto vote... On that note I am in fact bringing the whole kit and caboodle along.

Luckily the start times in my line of work ARE obscene, so commuting is less of an issue.

Anything Pre-OBDII get sniffed, so that means 1996 and never since it was required come '96, but you can find some OBDII cars a few years prior to that.

Is there still the conditional pass even without oem pieces or do they perform the visual first then fail you right away?

My middle of 'no where' is a small great community in the country...5 minutes to an town with groceries and gas, 15 minutes to bigger towns with box stores, 30 minutes to even bigger stores. Decent schools and sitters/daycare. Our small piece of heaven on earth to get away from the zoo. I hope you can find yours.

Yes, OBD2 was mandated for 1996, there were a few early entries, but 96+ for sure.
I checked: For etest 1988-1997 are tailpipe sniffed, '98+ is OBD2 readiness checked.

You are only allowed one. Conditional FYI, and the visual... Well that's hit and miss, sometimes they see things and somet they don't?

The thing that gets me is that the Drive Clean website says the visual is checking for missing parts, not original parts, so in theory so long as there are cats, and O2 sensors and the like it should all be good. Does that seem like a correct assessment?

Re:

Not sure. I am not sure if they are required to inspect before testing or only after a fail. If the latter then it should not matter what is there as long as the emissions are in spec.

I had one place tell me there was too much of a leak in the system to do the test (visual check only). They wanted to replace the exhaust pipes. I took it to another place and they told me that the test actually tests for leaks before testing emissions and the truck passed the leak test. So with the sniff test it seems that each shop has their own check.

The place I finally went to was in Fergus. The guy treated me and Scott decently on the etest.

Why do you people in the South have to make things do difficult? It's almost worth having to pay $1.20/L for regular gas year round! Almost...
