My XTerra has 3 electrical "ports" (not sure if that's the right word - the kind people used to put cigarette lighters in) and the one by the back gate konked out on me the other day. I had just plugged in my portable compressor to top up the tires when it chugged a couple of times, then died. Initially, I thought it was the compressor but it worked fine in the port on the dash so it's clearly the port at the back that's at fault.

How do I get this port working again? I suppose the first thing to do is to check for a blown fuse but I can't make head nor tails out of the wiring diagrams in the manual. I'm not sure where that fuse is or if a fuse is even a plausible theory given that one of the other ports works fine (I haven't tried the one in the storage thing between the front seats). Would all three ports share a fuse or are they all on separate fuses? What would make the port fail if not a fuse?

Check fuse 26 i believe from the wiring diagram. the rear power socket is constant power and that looks like the only power socket that doesn't run through the ignition switch/relay. Also check fuse 5 and fuse 7 those are the accessory powered sockets.

I'm still trying to get a bit of spare time so that I can get over to my friend's place. He'll have the necessary tools and skill to help me remove the fuses without breaking them and to test them properly. I have neither. I hope to get to that point in the next few weeks....

I have a couple of additional small jobs that I want to work through with him at the same time, including the sensor that supposedly only activates the backup lights when you're in reverse, and a faulty tire pressure sensor that keeps my TPMS light on. He has a hoist to access the sensor and knows how to determine which of the tire sensors is the faulty one and, I assume, help me swap it out. (Actually, I'm hoping he can show me how to do all three jobs correctly since I really don't know how to do any of them myself.)

Is it done yet?

I finally had a chance to get together with my friend and look at the problem with the outlet in my XTerra. In a matter of moments, he demonstrated to me that there was no problem with the fuse, which I should have realized myself from the start since my inflater would work for a couple of seconds before it failed. We connected the inflater and he found that by jiggling it within the socket, we could get it to run longer if we held the plug in just the right position. GIven that the socket on the dash and the one in the centre console both work fine, there's clearly no electrical problem at all. He thinks that the socket itself is slightly broken and replacing it should solve my problem. We didn't have the time to figure out how to get access to the socket; we agreed that I would figure that out.

I'll go through the manuals and/or search YouTube for instructions on how to get to that socket.

to get to the socket you need to remove the floor panel and tiedown rail on that side. it's not to hard to do
