Diff and transfer case oils????
Hey everyone,
Just looking for a little advice Its time for a little maint on the X and i was wondering what you guys are using in the diff and transfer case in the way of Brand/Weight??
I would like to upgrade to Mobil1 or something of the sort but dont really want to stray from Nissan rec weight of oil!! Just do not know what weight is rec. Oh, also do you have to put an additive in the rear diff for the limited slip??
Thanks in advance, Sean
P.S. Anyone got a real good condition Optima Red top for sale???

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
Transfer Case = ATF. Go with Synthetic if you like.
Diffs = 75w90. If LSD Equipped, use an LSD equipped oil. Again, synthetic if you like is just fine.

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
I used Mobil 1 gear oil in the diffs with no additive, and mobil 1 ATF in the transfer case. No complaints so far, changed them more than a year ago. The mobil 1 gear oil is 75-90 instead of the rec'd 80-90 but I've been told that is fine, lots of people running 75-90. With the synthetic you probably won't need additive.

Royal Purple Max Gear 75-90 for diffs and manual tranny and the Royal Purple Synchromax for the transfer case.

Royal purple is good for LSD and non LSD units, if I'm not mistaken. The bottle will specify.

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
Got mine from here: http://precisiontuning.ca/
As per royal purple's propaganda...
Max-Gear is an ultra-tough automotive gear oil. It’s designed to maximize power and provide unsurpassed protection to heavily loaded gears. It makes gears run smoother, quieter, cooler and longer without overhauls.
Max-Gear outperforms other gear oils because it combines the highest quality synthetic oils with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synslide additive technology.
Max-Gear is recommended for use in truck, motor home / RV, and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions, and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid. All viscosities of Max-Gear are formulated with hypoid friction modifiers necessary for use in clutch or cone type differentials. No additional additives are necessary.

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
Its actually hard to find any synthetic gear oil without the LS additive in it. I'm sure you'll be fine with any syn gear oil you choose.

Thanks for all the advise!!! Royal Purple Wins!
LOL, now how much do i need for front and rear diff. How much for transfer case? dont want to drain and then be left short!

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
For my 00 XE, as per FSM:
Transfer case - 2.2 L Synchromax
Front Diff - 1.5 L Max Gear 75W90
Read Diff - 2.8 L Max Gear 75W90
The 02 S/C should be the same; maybe someone else can confirm

Those are the volumes I use. They are fully compatible with the LSD. I got mine in Guelph at:
Performance Improvements
672 Woolwich St
Guelph, ON N1H 3Z1
(519) 821-6740
They ship if needed. You can check their website: http://www.royalpurple.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They list all of their dealers.
The comment I got from my Service Manager in Sarnia was: "This is the least amount of metal filings I have ever seen on one of these". This was when referring to the magnet attached to the plugs for the diffs and transfer case.

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
I looked under my truck and the front diff plugs were just caked with under coating. The rear ones are pretty covered too. If there is an off chance that they have NEVER been changed (wouldn't be surprised in the front diff), would changing them now hurt? (like it could with an auto trans)

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
you can use MT oil in the diff and add AC Delco LSD additive, I would never roll without LSD additive.

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
I wouldn't. GL4's and GL5's are totally diffferent fluids. GL4's usually don't have the right additives to hold up in a differential. I'm not really going to get into it... Just use what the manufacturer recommends.great dane wrote:you can use MT oil in the diff and add AC Delco LSD additive, I would never roll without LSD additive.
If you're going to use a different companys LSD addy; Ford's kicks ass, FWIW.

Re: Diff and transfer case oils????
I hear what you guys are saying..... but do we all agree that if going the Royal Purple route, im ok without the LSD additive??
I would have to assume so, as they advertise that all additives are built into the oil.
