Cross Border Tire shopping

I found a tire retailer in Barffalo that gives canucks a 10% discount on tires. I got a quote for 5 33x10.5.15" BFG KM2's and he is offering them @ $179/tire which, if any of you have been tire shopping recently, is an amazing deal. He charges 13/wheel to mount + balance including stems and disposal fee. There is also 8.75% sales tax, but you might be able to get that back since you are not a citizen of USA or NY for that matter.

man, that's awesome to know Nige! last time i was shoppin around for TKO's it ended up not being that worth it to make the drive and spending, say 70 bucks on fuel and time. but for KM2's in a 33's, definitely worth the drive to acton, er buffalo. wonder if he'll even do cash?! i'm thinking if one could also use them to haggle with with other buffalo tire joints near the border...?

i'm sure he would accept cash! Yes i did the same to pickup my arb bumper, it's about 4 hours round trip for me with a stop for food and 1 tank of gas, so yeah it's about $70 and a few hours. I think most of these truck tires are made in USA, so you shouldn't have to pay duty on them according to the NAFTA when crossing the border. For someone who lives in erie or st catherines niagara penin. it is quite attractive deal, although im sure those folks are no stranger to c.b.s. in the first place, especially with the loonie surpassing parity

Now if only you could find somebody to ride down with you who just wanted to pick up a set of rims/rubber from the guy, you could cut your fuel cost in half! He/she might even buy your lunch.

Not a bad price, they retail at $308 each, and I can discount them to about $240 each..

So, $179 +13 install = 192. x local tax = 208.80. plus 13%HST at border assuming no duty etc. = ~$235.94. *4 = 943.78. +Fuel and lunch @$70 =1013.78. /4 = 253.44 each, all in. vs. Morpheus' price which, if install/balance is included, is 240 x 13% = 271.20. Still cheaper to c.b.s. ...by $71. If you have the time and don't mind the mileage on the truck....

I recently went through the same dilemma when I got my BFG KOs. Initially the prices in the US seamed to blow away the Canadian prices but after working it through the price difference is much closer then it initially appeared. Using the same calculations as Ron outlines the price for four installed tires in the US came to within $100 here in Burlington. I than called three local places to negotiate the best deal and the price came to within $45 dollars on a $1000 purchase vs going to Buffalo (all prices converted to $CDN). I chose to get them locally, since I got to drop off the truck at lunch and had it done before I got off work, kept the money in the Canadian economy, and saved my self four hours on a Saturday. I find that working for the best deal locally often gets me to prices that negate the advantages of c.b.s.

Their price is even below my cost of the tire.

There's a lot of fee's that are added to the tires at the border. If I wanted to buy a 53 foot truckload of tires from across the border, I could get a good deal on them like that too.... unfortunatly, I don't get that much call for tires.

That's what we've always done. I've known guys that have taken advantage of a rim/tire combo deal they often offer at Discount Tire Co. He drove over to Detroit on four donuts and came back with some bling rims and rubber.
