Princess Auto's $50 Bar Fridge

Post by Bow_Tied »

I bought one of these today with intention of eventually using it in our travel trailer.

120V 0.95A
only 22lbs!
Twin cooling fans (no coolant/freon)
See newest PA flyer, pg46

I plug it inside my garage today to test it out.
Ambient ~22deg
Set to Max: Deg/time
+15*/10m
+7*/30m
(I went to do some errands)
-1*/4h
set it back one notch, reset clock
+3/30m
set back one more notch
+5/30m
set back to Med
+7/30m

It seems to work pretty well for the couple of hours I have had it so far. I am sure ambient temp would impact the temps I recorded.
It has an LED light inside that ain't do much...maybe if it was really dark out.

These are scratch and dent recons... it looks like a truck load or warehouse was damaged, some of the units had some decent scratches/dents. I sorted through all of them until I found one I liked with no dents, almost no scratches and with the shelf still inside. :teeth:
They come in black or white, I got black.

FYI

Yea, these become pretty limited in 30c weather. They work best when always plugged in, however unless you get a serviced lot, you will drain a battery overnight. Comes in handy when traveling with the kids and keep it plugged in to keep beverages cold. But not that great for a camper.

You have one of these? By "limited in 30 deg weather", do you mean it won't stay cold enough for perishables or?

I have a similiar fridge that uses the same principal. So at best it keeps stuff 40f colder than the outside air it is using. Hence on a 90f day, stuff will be 50f, which is well within the range for prime bacteria growth. You can counter this by adding ice, but they are already compromised by their size. Start hitting garage sales and kijiji to look for a used camper fridge. They show up on a regular basis and what your Shasta needs!

Good points, I appreciate the feedback.

If I am camping in weather at ~30°C or more, the unit will not work without ice. That doesn't bother me, I already have an icebox that is in addition to this fridge in case we are somewhere without hydro so space is not a huge concern.

While the old 3 way propane fridges work better, they weigh a ton and new ones are several hundred dollars. I can buy a lot of ice for that. Maybe I will get one of those in the future if I find a screaming deal, but what I have right now will do me fine.

I know it is a lot of money but I have come to love my ARB fridge. I ran it at 2 degrees for days and it did not even register on the battery. I'd not buy a cheap fridge as they would only work in cool temps. Better to buy a good ice chest. But if you like it then

Trust me rev, I'd rather have a fridge like yours. Tied to a deep cycle battery on my trailer that would be suh-weet. However it would also double the value of trailer. :teeth: The PA fridge is better than a crappy tire coolatron which is what we had before, lol. But I am sure no where near what you have.

Maybe in a year or two...

Welcome to CNTC Ada21!! The store is a automotive/hardware store that also carries a lot of surplus items here called Princess Auto. I suspect there aren't any of these stores in France? http://www.princessauto.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The brand of the firdge I believe is Haier (I might have spelled that wrong).

As an update I have used this fride several times. It works awesome as a place to keep softdrinks, condiments, bread, etc. But I would not recommend it for very perishiable things like milk, meat, eggs when the ambient is in the high 20s+ as noted above. It really only keeps about a 22 degree differential without adding ice. I have picked up a small bar fridge for free thanks to a pal and fellow member that works great, so between these two fridges I am all set.

Wow! The price of that fridge is really cheap. Where did you buy it? I am also looking a non-expensive fridge for camping use.

I missed that one too Ron. I thought it was weird that there were links at the bottom of the page, but I was more amused by the revival of a thread that was over 2 years old...
