spare parts for trail runs
So I'm just getting my budget and mod list together for the X ,and I started thinking about what is the most commonly damaged parts when riding the trails?
Since I may have access to a scrapped X I thought I could salvage the odd piece as well as keep the old parts off my truck when the mods get done.
Looking for input from you guys as to what's fragile and prone to damage?
Always good to have some spare parts on hand? ( small stuff)
Thanks, and hope to see everyone again this year.

Tie rods and tie rod ends!

Re: spare parts for trail runs
Most of the time, guys end up using their old OEM parts as trail spares, so it ends up being a list of whatever they have already upgraded.
Here is what I usually have with me in the truck:
Alternator
Tie rod assembly (inner end, adjuster, outer end. It's way easier to replace on the trail as a complete assembly)
Torsion bars
Various steering components
Auto-locking hub (I actually have the complete hub assembly, bearings and all, just in case)
Wheel studs in case you snap a few.
Some guys have more, some have less. It becomes a war for space in the end, as to how much crap you want to haul out to the trail with you.
One of the good things about wheeling in a group like we do, is you usually have a good smattering of replacement stuff.

Re: spare parts for trail runs
Thanks.
As always, the reply to member questions is lighting fast on this forum.....
My objective is just to put together a "small" custom box to take with me. As always, these parts are meant to be shared with those in need.
I agree that space is an issue, so I'm just looking to bring some of the most common (small) pieces.
Thanks
P.

Re: spare parts for trail runs
And another thing to factor in, is that with both generations of Xterras out on the trail, you have to carry stuff for your own vehicle.
What I mean by that is, you have a 2006, so none of the parts that I carry on the trail will be of any use to you, aside from the tools I normally have with me.
This is actually one of the reasons why I don't wheel very much with my local off-roading club. I know that if I bust something on the trail with CNTC, there's a good chance that someone I'm wheeling with will have a replacement if I don't have it. If I wheel with a group full of Jeeps, none of them will have anything parts wise to help me out.
Not saying that wheeling with Jeeps is bad, just that I always feel a lot more comfortable wheeling with other Nissans.
I forgot to mention that I usually have a spool of wire with me, as well a slew of various size fuses as well. You never know what you are going to need!

Re: spare parts for trail runs
^ I can relate to that wheeling a GMC. Luckily is this a good groups of guys that tolerate that and the reason I stay on trails I think my rig is comfortable with. Still anything is possible. Also, bring the tools you need to install the parts you have is a good idea.
