Minden Hydro Lines

Post by qwertymnb »

Hey guys,
I have a few questions about the trail.
1. Is it a good trail for a pretty much stock xterra? the of4wd trail rating says it is but I just want to make sure
2. when the trail ends, do you just turn around and go back the way you came?

I'm going up to haliburton on the 28th with a buddy and his jeep, so we decided to do a trail together.

1. Yes, it is. However there a few tricky spots where getting out of rig to check the line is required and few more where a spotter is recommended. If neither of you have been on the trail before, this very true.
2. Correct. You will get to a clearing under the power lines with a small lake on your left. This is the turn around spot. We usually have lunch there. Continuing to the right is a no-no as this is closed to vehicle traffic without special permission as it approaches QEII park.

Remove rigid mudflaps and running boards. Have rear recover points at least and suitable strap. Drive slow through town/respect the locals.

There is one water crossing that you can't see the other side until you are part way through (aka the blind water crossing). It is rough with rocks. Stay close the rock wall (on your left on the way in) as the right will get you sunk. I think all the other water crossings are fine so long as you stay in the middle line of the crossing.

I don't know your experience level, so if some of the above was obvious I meant no insult, just covering basics. I presume you and your rig/gear are otherwise trail ready. Cheers.

There's a fork in the trail. Where the outhouse is/was. That part can hang you up if you don't know which way to go. (On the way in you go left). Otherwise you end up on the old outhouse trail which would crush a stock truck.

Lets see, there's also the "don't go left spot" and who can forget the place everyone has tried to roll of the edge of the trail.

I think this is the same spot. And why I commented on the water crossings.

Oooh, yes, how could I forget about that. There is a spot where the edge of the trail has eroded making it very narrow and a couple of rigs have meandered over the edge a tad. There is a by-pass you should use. The area has a lower lying marsh that is a 3-4' drop right at the edge of the trail, left side, on your way in. Obvious if you walk it but from the truck ou might not notice that the vegetation hides the erosion.

The water was pretty high last weekend, at least that's what others were saying. It seemed kind of the same as the last time I was there but that was years ago.

If you are not sure about a crossing you can always find a long stick and probe for the deep spots.

If youve never done it before I'd be warty of the spot already mentioned along the rock wall water crossing. I've only seen pics of trucks that have gone off, but stick close to the wall and you'll be ok. Hip waders perhaps to poke and prod around those water spots. I've seen stock vechiles in there before and you should be okay. Like mentioned before a spotter may be in your best interest just incase. Good luck and have fun.

We ended up not going. The trail going in to our campsite took way longer to complete then what we thought it would. Had to move a bunch of fallen trees

I am in the area, most of the lakes are up record high. my lake is up almost a foot, dock is underwater! I wouldn't be surprised if the water crossing is 3 feet deep in some sections
