New to me Xterra
So i picked up my 02 Xterra SE/SC today
Here are a few things i got from the ECU on codes , some clarity would be welcome and what i need for in parts or should do to fix it so i do not have the codes . This is my first Xterra.
code 1 :
P0125 - Power Train - Inssuficient coolant Temperature for closed loop fuel control
Code 2 :
P0455 - Power train - Evaporative emissions control system leak detected (gross leak , Check fuel cap , Pipeing etc) not the fuel cap checked it.
Code 3 :
P1448 - Power train - Evap Canistor Vent Control Valve (open)
Code 4:
P0328 - Power train - Knock Sensor 1 Circuit high input (bank 1 or Single sensor) - Assume the Resistor mod can fix this?
I also have the ABS light on but since it has sat for a while i assume maybe dirty sensors or something along those lines. ( atleast i hope so )
Anyway any feedback is appreciated
Greg

Re: New to me Xterra
Congrats on the rig purchase!
The low temp code could be a thermostat that is stuck open. If you don't have service records I would recommend a coolant flush and a new thermostat.
I will let others more knowledgeable than I speak to the rest. I think the knock sensor is common issue with these engines.

Welcome to the club!
Check all the hoses in the evap system and the metal piping for rust/holes. There was a recall years ago on the fuel filling system. So you might want to run your VIN through the system to check for recalls. A local dealer should be able to do this for you.
I am not sure if the above led to the valve being open. Might be or it might be stuck with age. Never had this problem but I would see if I could free the thing up but if they are cheap then I would just buy a new one.
For the knock sensor, I would not try a resistor mod. It would be better to do the knock sensor mod to put a new one in a more accessible location (ex. intake manifold). There is a thread on how to do this mod in the forums. Though it might only be accessible to premium members (small donation steps you up to premium member and gives you access to other things like factory service manuals)
Knowing if your blown motor is knocking is an important thing. The resistor mod just fools the computer into thinking all is fine when it may not be okay. This can lead to a blown motor.

Re: New to me Xterra
To add: my abs sensor comes and goes. Not sure why. There is one road in Fergus that turns it on without fail. Yet I can drive to Cobourg and back with no light. Makes no sense. So I gave up.
Do the relocate with the Knock sensor. Easy. And the other codes I would follow above advice.
Welcome!
Scott.

Re: New to me Xterra
I got pissed off with the KS and the relocation, so I swapped to a resistor it's been over 5 years (before I joined the army, which was 5 years in March).
When my ABS light has been on, it's because my wheel bearing was due/overdue.

Re: New to me Xterra
So news today , The Tempterature code is gone after topping up coolant , the knock sensor code is still there i am probably going to just do the resistor mod , and the evap codes still plagueing me , but tomorrow i will burn the midnight oil and try and figure it out , on top of a tune up tommorrow also.
Found that i need both front lower ball joints , rotors pads , and after that i am hopeing abs light will go away after cleaning everything.
ill upload some pics from today too.

Looking good. Keep that coolant flush on the list.

Looks good. The tail pipe might become 'modded' by the rocks on the trail...lol
I had the abs light come on. Found out it was from a nicked seal on a front tire that let some grease on the tone ring so the sensor could not get a proper reading. When it did this the ABS would kick it very quickly. If your is not doing that and the tone ring/sensor are clean then check any connections and maybe trace the wires back for nicks. Something to try when you have the front hub off. Never had a problem with the rear abs. 300k+ on the truck and it was fine

Re: New to me Xterra
Yes coolant Flush is on my list still it just moved down the list a bit , and yes the pipe is kinda out and about isn't it . When i tear the brakes apart this weekend i will be checking the sensors and rings and cleaning for both fronts . see if that fixes it or not.

Sounds like a fun weekend! A few wobbly pops and a friend or two would top it off nicely

Re: New to me Xterra
wobbly pops LOL , I live with 3 roomates and 1 of them is a mechanic , and in my car group i am in for my other car we have another mechanic , and since i have the biggest garage (fits 4 cars) , they do any work needed here , so we gave it a name "wrenchaus" but most importantly the currency is beer . So use the faclities or have a one of the mechanics help it costs beer . so yes fun weekend for sure

Re: New to me Xterra
So another thing has poped up , AC compressor is squeeling like mad , and i found no kit to replace the bearings and such inside the clutch , Is there a way to bypass it with a shorter belt? has anyone done that before? I know i did it with my focus but they had a belt option for no AC , so far no luck with a no AC belt for mine.

Re: New to me Xterra
I would just get a used compressor if you can. There is usually an Xterra or frontier at kenny u pull, or standard auto wreckers.
I don't think the xterra came without a/c.

On my roommates xterra (2003) the ac belt is the only thing on that circuit (just looked). Can't you just take the belt off?

if your non supercharged it is the only thing on it , but mine is supercharged so it goes AC ---> S/C -----> Idler ----> Idler----->crank
