Adventure Camper Trailers
I'm just starting to lay out the plans for an an adventure trailer, like so;
I'm probably going to use a pickup bed for the base, and have a 4-6 person tent on top.
Anyone ever build anything similar? Tips/tricks?

Re: Adventure Camper Trailers
I was contemplating the same type of deal. Based on a military box trailer and a titan winch rooftop tent. Maybe fab a pop out kitchen type of system as well. Not quite as fancy as your pick but should handle the trails. I believe the military utility trailer still have pintle hitches which would be good and have decent hight. I figure the basic set up, trailer and tent to be about 14-1500 hun.

Re: Adventure Camper Trailers
I researched off-road trailers a fair bit in the fall. Most sources say the Canadian Military M101 is the best place to start or if you can find a good American M416. This site has the basics and some background information Jeep Expeditions - M101 Trailer. They seem to be popular and are in short supply so pricing can be a problem $$. I would suggest researching them and deciding if thats what you want or if not copy a good portion of the design: pintle hitch, wheel base, ground clearance, overhangs, armour, etc.

Re: Adventure Camper Trailers
Right now I'm actually looking at hacking up my B2000. The major downside of this is the redneckness of doing it, but on the upside:
- 6 bolt wheels. Can have matching rims/tires on truck and trailer, and trailer spare can go on truck, etc.
- Reasonably light weight. The whole truck is ~2800 lbs, so minus engine and half the body I figure the trailer will be in the 1000lb range.
- bed has 4 tiedowns on each side, and 2 on the gate
- reciever hitch on the back for bike rack, recovery, towing backward, etc.
- handy size: 4ft+ wide by 7.5ft long.
The only other downside is the overall length. Being a long bed the rear overhang is pretty substantial. This can hurt if its loaded wrong, and on major trails. However, if I spend $0 on the trailer part, I can put decent money into the accomodations.
It's obviously not ideal, but should work out o.k. If only I could find a 1998 hardbody to use as a base so that it would match even better.

Re: Adventure Camper Trailers
Military surplus dealers. There are a few dealers around Toronto, some out west and it seems like most of them are in Quebec. With only 2,000 or so M101's built and many still in service you may have to call in a favour with the big guy to find one, even then you may not like the price.

Any info on where such suppliers are near TO, and what you think one would cost?

Re: Adventure Camper Trailers
I've seen a few of those on Ebay or Craiglist...
Usually they go for 900$ to 1500$ depending on the shape they're in. I've seen a few rare ones go for less, but you'd really have to be lucky to find one.

Re: Adventure Camper Trailers
Contacted the seller yesterday and before he got back to me I did a little more research and discovered that it is a lot narrower than I thought. The tread width is 49.6" with an overall width of 60", perfect for a Jeep, Xterra, 4Runner or Tacoma, a little too narrow for a full-size pickup.
If anyone is interested he has an offer for $1200 but the potential buyer is out of town for a few weeks, so it's first come first serve.
Now I'm looking for the larger M101A2 (3/4 Ton) or equivalent, if you have one, know about them or know of a good or local supplier please post.
M101A1 Specs

Just noticed the M101A1 Specs link didn't work in my earlier post. Should be fixed now.
