Indeed, but as we pieced together at McGregor last year, from the mounds of wood shavings, it seems that they like to keep it for themselves, pile it up behind the store, so they can bag it and sell it.

My MSR Dragonfly stoves. They're hot and fast but completely adjustable flame as well. The noise is the only thing I don't like. They're nicknamed "The rocket" by many. Not a wonder.

But you know the coffee will be ready in just a few minutes when you wake up to the sound of the Rocket preparing for lift-off!

I need a new knife in particular. Any recommendations?

What do you want to use it for - just stuff around camp, in your pocket for everyday use??
Do you prefer fixed blade or folding?

Lots more questions to ask to help narrow down the search, but for a fixed blade camp knife - Bark River makes some lovely ones. For a folding knife to stick in your pocket for a hike or everyday box-killing and apple peeling - CLB-designed Bokers, or a Spyderco Delica.

I recommend a folding knife that has a lock. And keep it sharp.

Spyderco Delica or Endura
Boker Trance, Hyper or Direkt
Benchmade Mini-Griptilian

Any of those are decent folders, made with good quality steel and have excellent customer service - if something were to ever happen with the knife. None of these are ridiculously expensive, although it doesn't take much to head down that path...

If you want to handle some of these it wouldn't be too difficult to locate them in the TO area. Like has been mentioned above - these all have one form of lock or another. They are intended to be kept sharp. A dull knife can be more dangerous than a very sharp one.

I was at an army surplus store (Dufferin and Lawrence, anyone been there?) and he showed me a nice locking spyderco knife. Had a decent rubber grip and he wanted $50 for it. I might have bought it but I have no idea how much these things are worth.

I used those MSR stoves in the infantry. They are a fantastic piece of kit.

I was given the Steripen 'Classic' UV water purifying device for Christmas. I haven't had a chance to test it out, but it sounds promising.
I think with a coffee filter to screen out the visible chunkies, and this little gizmo to get the microscopic stuff, it might be a winner...

Anyone have any experience with these?

I found that link on google, neat product.

UV is an excellent technology for purifying water. It does have limitations. I work for the world leader in Ultra Violet light water treatment disinfection, let me know if you have questions, I am not a biologist, but might be able to help if you want to understand something more about UV technology.

Waterproof and compact, perfect for camping with a vehicle or trailer, and possibly even with a backpack. I came across one of these bags at the dollar store, I had seen them, and heard about them but hadn't given them much thought as to usefullness for my purposes. I picked it up anyway figuring it might be good for packing stuff away at the end of a season.
The bag on the right is from the dollar store...I suspect the material not to be as durable as other brands for re-use purposes, but for emergency packing looks to be perfect.
The one on the left is from a 15pack kit I picked up at Costco, for 28 bucks.Varius sizes (medium shown) plus 2 or 3 luggage bags, which have a rolling valve(so no need for a vaccuum).
I thought these bags would be cool for storing stuff in the truck that I rarely need, ie:ermergency kit but was hoping to find a manageable system for camping. without toting along the vac?
I suspect the 12v inflator/deflator for sale would suffice but wasn't sure of their draw power, so I saved my $30 and continued shopping. I wandered through Zellers and found a wet/dry vac, 12v car size. Shown on river right of the photo.
Small, compact and had the power to vac the bags.($20). This is now a viable system for camping in the truck/van or tent trailer.
kit: left bag-winter kit for emergencies-Heavy polyester fleece sweater,fllece blanket, rainpants, touque,gloves, wooden matches in box, and i think i remembered to stick a pair of xl pantyhose in there too.

bag on right-ground sheet,pocket knife, 115ft of 20guage wire,wool tougue,gloves,rain poncho,emergency blanket,several emerg.bags water,engerycubes(2 personX4days),whistle,N95mask,gloves,polyester sweater, TPx2rolls,20greentea bags,lighter,first aid kit,bleach,flashlight and bats, glow-sticks, a flashing red wand with bats($.79 at zellers with the bats, this thing has 2 flashing modes and a solid glo-stick effect as well) etc etc, and a water resistant back pack for toting the above if you need to pull it out.
These bags both fit nicely between the rear seat and ranegler net, and don't take up a lot of space.
Now I am going to put my camping lists together and figure out my packing plan, utilizing these bags. Compact and waterproof and with the addition of the small 12v wet/dry vac, re-usuable whilst on the trail.
