Lift Shackles

Post by avacado »

I've been spending more and more time out at the shop playing with the welders and stuff lately and have been trying to think of different things I can make as I practise. I'm not at the point where I'm ready to build that rear bumper I want. So I thought I might have a go and making some lift shackles. I think I'd like to go up about 1.5" when everything is all settled.

So my questions are these:

- Has anyone ever done this? (I'm looking at you Bender.:weld: ) and if so, do you have any measurments, designs or anything that you'd be willing to share?
- Suggestions on thickness/type of steel to use?
- Is there any reason I can't re-use the old bolts, bushings, etc. so long as they're in good shape?
- I've seen shackles which are designed with a dog-leg type angle in them instead of being straight; sort of like a hockey stick. I can't think of any advantage to doing this. If you know what I'm talking about and know why it's good, I'm all ears. :?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
