Good recovery :teeth: Of course I would be there. Is the Pope Catholic? Do bears poop in the woods? Is a frog's ass water-tight?

And besides, I want to pick yer brain about a few odds and ends, things that would sound rude on the board (like balancing the front drive shaft), and this place is populated by too many gutter-minds to talk about here.

Give me a shout when you set the date.

Scored one today for $280, but they said they would honor the $300 price tag for the rest of you that A&A in Hamilton is offering.

Forgot to bring their info home, but they are in Milton. Will post the info tomorrow.

What did Rock Spyder charge you to rebuild the steering gear? May I ask what the hydro assist ran you?

Bender - is the actual BOX leaking - meaning is the box cracked or is it leaking from some worn seal? Currently our Xterra is just dripping power steering fluid and folks on the .org are saying that all that needs to be replaced is some lower output shaft seal.

So after much researching this part on Google, I think that judging by this picture here, the part number that I would need would be 49202S... which is this part here.

After further investigation here at work, that is a picture of a WD21 steering box. The begining of that number is a Nissan steering part number, but then they just made up the rest using WD22 for Xterras.

Anyone have success using WD21 parts in WD22 steering boxes?

Mine is leaking at the seal, but I would bet the sector shaft is pitted all to hell. Bearings could be shot allowing the shaft to wander and it would still piss out.

Buying a reman'ed I know it is all rebuilt top to bottom. Putting a price on my time, I think I would rather go with a guaranteed fix.

I think that is the smart move. You can now also redo the seal on your old box when you have time, if in otherwise good shape, and sell it to reduce your out of pocket costs on the job.

If the shaft is pitted is this still repairable? I didn't think it was. If it's the bearings I'm assuming there's OEM/aftermarket replacements? It seems that Ron has a great idea as long as you're going to get more money for it after rebuild costs than you would for a core return.

Jay and I took a good look through the service and parts manuals today.

If the production date of your truck is 11/99 or earlier ie: 2000 model year xterra, the power steering box is rebuildable, and nissan has a seal kit.

As of 12/99+ they went to a different power steering box that is slightly different, and they no longer have a rebuild kit listed.

It's possible that a 2000 xterra power steering box will fit on a 2001,2,3,4 xterra and work fine, but I can't say for sure.

If you got your hands on one, at least you'd have a rebuildable one installed on your truck, but at that point, maybe you should have just bought the $300 box.

Actually, I'm curious about lubing the shaft, particularly the part of the shaft that extends, and what size fitting is required... It just happens that Bender's box is leaking. And I actually have a spare balanced shaft I might consider using, instead of the one there now.

Hey buddy, you asked.

Oh I should mention, were I don't think I have, that my box is leaking as well. The weird thing is that the resevoir is pretty much topped up but the PS starts to complain, so I add just a small shot of fluid, and it's happy again for another few weeks....it's not like it doesn't have any fluid

Out of curiosity, you are checking the fluid level with the truck running, yes? If not, it can show high when off. Maybe that's why you think the level is okay, but a little added solves your issue. Always check tranny fluid, and brake fluid when the vehicle is running.

Ya, I'm definitely doing it while the truck is off. It's a hydraulic system, so I thought it would be pressurised when running.

What's weird is that for what I know, you're not suppose to overfill it, but with the amount I have to add, I'm prettty much filling the resevoir to the brim.
