Re: Finally...getting the lift - Part II
OK, so I finished it up today. Old torsion bars out; new ones in. We marked the old bars so I could index the new bars properly, but the marker wore off with all the PB Blaster and handling, so i just set the adjuster at 45 degrees, and tightened them up. No good; under tension the adjusters were exposed beneath the cross-member. So I re-indexed the bars and went at it again, and now only part of the head is exposed. Still not optimum, but I hope the suspension will settle, and I will have to re-adjust the tension, and then they will go into the cross-member. Otherwise, I will be re-indexing them again.
Thanks again for everybody's help yesterday; couldn't have done it without you.

Were you able to get it outta the garage without the extra 850lbs on the back end?

Actually I think I liked it better before...the tires look too small. Can we set up a meet next weekend to take it out? I'll buy you another donut?new4x4'r wrote:Aweesome Pete! Does it look good?
Maybe tomorrow when it's light out, otherwise it would look like this...steelcityslicker wrote:C'mon Pete!!! PICTURES!!!!!
It's still in the garage, so I don't know if I will be able to get it out of the garage...guess I'll find out when I go to take it for an alignment. Might have to air down the tires to 5 psi.LGM wrote:Were you able to get it outta the garage without the extra 850lbs on the back end?

Re: Finally...getting the lift - Part II
Drivers side - brute force; took the one of the old camber bolts, stuck it in the back of the adjuster and bashed it with a BFH and the torsion bar popped out. Managed it by myself.Nismojunky wrote:glad everything worked out btw how did you get them out?
Passenger side; not as easy. Brute force didn't work. Tibor came by and we used dueling propane torches to heat the sh!t out of the adjuster; got it hot enough to light the residual PB Blaster on fire in the cross-member and the adjuster. That stuff doesn't extinguish easily. After we put out the flames, we figured it might be hot enough, so while he held both torches on the adjuster, I used the now mangled camber bolt and the BFH to bash out the torsion bar from the back of the adjuster.

Re: Finally...getting the lift - Part II
That's the way I did mine as well. Heat them up, take a drift pin or equivalent (cabmer bolt) and insert it from the rear, and smash away until the t-bar pops out.sandor wrote:Drivers side - brute force; took the one of the old camber bolts, stuck it in the back of the adjuster and bashed it with a BFH and the torsion bar popped out. As for the front, if you unbolt the anchor, insert a few washers between the face of the t-bar and the control arm, you can then tighten the anchor back up, and in doing do, you will drive the t-bar out. Start with 1 or 2 washers, tighten the anchor down, then back it off and put a few more washers in. Eventually, the t-bar will come right out.

Re: Finally...getting the lift - Part II
Had a loan-a-tool puller set (pitman arm, tie rod, ball-joint, etc) on hand that we needed for the pitman arm. It had an adjustable two-jaw puller in there that was perfect for the front; pulled the anchor off with ease.Jayman wrote:As for the front, if you unbolt the anchor, insert a few washers between the face of the t-bar and the control arm, you can then tighten the anchor back up, and in doing do, you will drive the t-bar out. Re: Finally...getting the lift - Part II
One of these days when I have a steady frigging job i'll have to invest into a Oxy-Acetylene torch. That would have made it easier to take the torsion bars out.sandor wrote:Drivers side - brute force; took the one of the old camber bolts, stuck it in the back of the adjuster and bashed it with a BFH and the torsion bar popped out. Re: Finally...getting the lift - Part II
I was able to get the truck out of the garage today, but not without hitting the garage door opener track with the roof rack. Looks like I won't be parking in that side on a regular basis unless I modify that bracket...or unless you guys want to come down and hang off the truck each time I pull it in or out of the garage.LGM wrote:Were you able to get it outta the garage without the extra 850lbs on the back end?

Our old garage door opener was similiar to yours, I had to adjust it to avoid hitting the top of our old van. You should be able to move the bolts down the bracket further to avoid hitting the top of your truck no?
Oh and ?
