Thanks Simon.

I was thinking of the RV breakers. Probably two 100 amps in series (or parallel...lol) should do it for a 2000w inverter. Perhaps it is better to run it normally with a 100 amp breaker and add the second only on high amp draws. This way if it draws too much then tripping the 100amp breaker will act as a warning before adding the second 100 amp breaker in the unlikely event that I need all 2000w.

The plan is to run my small CH compressor I use for nailing trim. SInce the 2000w model was $30 more than the 1000w I went with the bigger model...if it is designed to run for 2000w then it should easily run 1000w.

Power inverters are great. I used to have a 400w one to run my CarPC in my Mx-3, than moved up to an 800w, which I still have. Than replaced it with a nice 1200w which I moved to the truck, which got submerged. I have a small slim 100w that I keep in my laptop bag which is perfect for travelling and with rental cars, and I got the girlfriend a small 30w to be able to charge her camera on the go since she loves to take pics (and has a habit of forgetting to charge her camera)

But it's a nice feeling when your independent for your power needs for off-roading, travelling or camping. I used to travel with an extension cord and have to find and park by electrical connections, now I keep an extension cord to power my tools and accessories from the truck...maybe for AW next year I'll bring some patio lights ;)

That breaker setup in series wouldn't work. When the first breaker pops, you'll lose power completely since the circuit is broken, so it would always be the 100amp that'll blow; they don't add up. Having breakers in parallel adds their current (amp) draw together, so 2 in parallel would give you 200amps worth of power. If you want only 100amps, you keep one 100amp breaker open.

In the end, I would say it's extra wiring to add complexity for not much reason. The breakers/fuses are there for protection, typically if there's a short. Drawing all 2000watts won't harm anything, and when you're connecting your inverter, you should wire it up *properly* for 2000w regardless. The inverter has it's own protection anyway, so it won't let you draw more than it can put out anyway. If the battery gets too low, around 10.5v, it'll shut down anyway, and you should still be easily able to start your truck at that point. I just put in a 200amp ANL fuse in a sealed holder and I've never touched it.

Thanks Michel. I think I was having a near-seniors moment about the series/parallel set-up of the breakers ;)

I guess it's been inverter week. One of my Xterra buddies up here decided to pick up a 3000w on sale at CT. Installed it under the passenger seat. Need to bash the underside to make it fit, and the seat wont slide up anymore (looks like you can rig spacers to where the seat mounts to the rail if you want to go that way.

Do you have to wire all these inverters to the battery? None plug into the cigarette plug?

Smaller inverters do this. I have a 75W that plugs into the ciggy. But it will only run small draw things like a laptop. There are slightly bigger ones, but by the time you are into a couple hundred watts+ you are drawing more amps than the cig lighter is fused for.

Okay then. They seem cool.At a good price. Just thinking what I would use it for.

The larger invertors are good for running small compressors for airing up and air tools. Because of the draw larger wires are needed and best connected to the battery with the fuse as close to the battery as possible.

|What are those Superwinches like? Do they have a good name?

Monsieur Fortin (Need4spdSE) is running a Superwinch in his front bumper. I'm not sure how many opportunities he's had to actually use it, but he'd be the best to give feedback about it.

It's been a good winch. Not fast but I've pulled myself and others out with it, typically more others than myself, heh. It's served me very well but in terms of putting on a new line this past winter and replacing the solenoids, from that one being on sale, I'm half way to a new winch, and mine isn't working yet...need to sort out if and where I wired up the solenoids wrong. Hoping time and weather will co-operate before winter... I really can't complain about it, and mine's only an 8500lb one.

For the inverters, the 400w ones were the highest ones that I've bought that still came with the cigarette lighter adapter.

It is an 8000lb winch. Kinda small isn't it?

@Miner - if you need or want me to pick something up then order it online for an in store pickup. Me or anyone else could pick it up for you. We can hand over the parts at the Christmas party (after a vigorous testing of course...lol)
