AC Problem

AC Problem
My A/C is not working. Is there a way to find out if it just needs a charge and the compressor is ok? I have seen the charge kits for about 50 bucks, but I don't want to spend 50 bucks if th compressor need replacing.

Well, it's not the most "green" way of testing, but you can take the cap off and CAREFULLY press down on the high side valve with a screw or nail or something. Keep your face away from there. If there is no sound, it needs a charge.

Not the most green??? It's not even remotely close... I'm pretty sure all Xterras from 2000 on are using the newly formulated refrigerants that don't do harm to the ozone layer any longer. But don't quote me on that.

If there is no R134A gas inthe system, you have a leak. Check the connection to the receiver dryer thats in front of the condensor and check the connection to the lines going to the evaporator.
I asked for a Jelly donut not a maple!!!

start by turing it on
is the compressor ingaging?
If so there is gas in it, otherwise the low pressure switch would turn it off
If not there is no gas and u have to find the leak.
If it does turn on then you have gas, if it doesnt turn off then you are low.
If the gas is low you preasure diffs arnt enuff for the evaporator to cool.
In that case u need to add some 134 but A shop should not do that by law. You need to know someone
if it doesnt turn on at all you also need to check to see if the compressor clutch is getting a signal(look at your wiring diagram)
if there is no signal you could try jumping the compressor to see if the system is good or you can start checking @ the realy for no relay sig or a bad relay or fuse.
It goes on and on.....
