Re: Winter Camping
When you are there, know I will be in my warm house drinking beer by the fireplace. Sounds like fun. Dark side of the moon with your pekker out cold, but otherwise fun. Good luck. I am too old, too candy ass for that anymore.

Re: Winter Camping
I'd bring a tent. I`m paying attention to snow / trail conditions and there isn't much up there.

Re: Winter Camping
Let's hope for a month of blizzards. I've had it with one BS winter after another.
I love all seasons, but not all ground conditions - slop should be banished. Give me "snow" or "grass", nothing in between.

Re: Winter Camping
Snow conditions aren't suitable for snow shelters, and since you can cut live trees in the park you should SERIOUSLY consider bringing at least a tarp and a Biv Bag...

Re: Winter Camping
Its great to see that there are winter campers in the group. I actually do quite a bit of this and as a matter of fact I am leading a group on a winter camping trip this weekend. In the 10+ trips that I have done I have only used a tent on a couple of occasions, preferring to sleep on the ground with a Thermarest and a sleeping bag as the setup. Since there are no bugs and no rain I find that shelter is not required unless the snow is falling. Even in that case, sleeping under an evergreen with low branches has been very effective even in heavy snow falls.
I worry about ice conditions more then snow conditions since it is far easier to walk on flat ground vs. bushwacking. This upcoming weekend has me quite worried about the ice, so we will likely stay off the water. The amount of snow only determines if we are going to bring snow shoes or not.
Here is a link to last years trip pictures which show the sleeping arrangement. With good bags this setup has worked for me even to -30C conditions. Last year’s trip was very cold with my el cheepo thermometer on the ziper of my pack never indicating warmer then -24C.

Re: Winter Camping
This is something I've wanted to get into for a while - in my avatar, the snow pile was a quinzee earlier in its life .
I've canoed all over the park - not the middle though, the lakes are annoyingly big.
I'm not sure about my availability yet, but just in case...
What will you likely bring? (What might I have to borrow/buy/rent? ... different season and all)
(ratings for bag and Thermarest? calibre and assortment of clothing? nature of food? specialized gear?)

Re: Winter Camping
I've had great success with a Canadian Forces winter bag with the Biv Bag over it. Only problem is when they get wet... They take FOREVER to dry.

Re: Winter Camping
I also use a the military bag, but I stuff it inside a Rockwater bag rated for -30. Only once have I slept inside both as I'm normally cooking and on top of the military bag.
I prefer the military foam pads to the thermorests in the winter, their performance doesn't change in severe cold temperatures.
