Fingers Still Crossed for Titan Diesel

With the RAM 1500 Diesel confirmed for 2014 I'm finding reasons to hold onto hope for the next Titan with a Cummins.

Cummins Developing I4 for Nissan Titan

Regretfully I admit the only way I will stay with Nissan is an efficient crew-cab long box (6.5'+) with ~400ft-lbs to pull 9,000lbs+. So Nissan needs something to best the new RAM (which makes me puke in my mouth a bit) Diesel, and the Ford EcoBoost.

I know the Cummins is a little..okay a lot...smaller then the diesel I wanted. However the 'little' Cummins ATLAS compares pretty favourably to the VK56 they used as a bench mark. I've compared the dyno charts and between 1600 and 2800 rpm the little diesel has more torque, and thus more horse power, then the the VK56. Considering that paired with a 5-speed auto my VK56 lives between 1500 and 3000 rpm the Cummins with the ZF 8-speed should out perform it (stock vs stock) in day to day use. Yes the VK56 has a broader power band and is definitely the performance choice, but where I actually use the truck ~1600 to 3000 rpm the "little" Cummins is the stronger of the two. Pairing it with a the ZF 8-speed strengthens the Cummins advantage as it should keep the little motor in its 1000 rpm (1600-2600 rpm) sweet spot.

Now the VM Motori 3.0 V6 Diesel that has found a home in the RAM 1500 and Jeep Grande Cherokee has the potential to be "badass". Stock output is 240 hp and 420 ft-lbs, and it revs freely to 5000 rpm. Gale Banks is on recorded claiming over 600 hp is possible in "Race Trim". I'm looking forward to seeing dyno graph for this little motor, and I will test drive the new RAM when the opportunity comes up.

Ok, sounds like the l4 cummins has 'enough' power for the Titan but maybe not enough to give the other trucks a slap in the face. The v6 diesel in the ram scares me a little, it's about time dodge quits with the 'Hemi' jango - every motor has a 'hemispherical cylinder head' since the 60's. Never liked the rams due to the basic engine and drivetrain, but it sounds a little more appealing with the diesel. I think it's time nissan puts out a 2500 series, or offers a HD Titan.

I'm my dream world I'd have the l4 cummins in the frontier and the l6 cummins in the Titan.

I think this was their only plan so far.

crew cab and cummins under the hood, i'd consider a NEW nissan or new vehicle once again.

makes sense, i'm guessing they wont drop a large cummins diesel in a nissan and compete directly with cummins powered dodges. there's probably some stipulation between cummins and chrysler? my guess is they'll let the big boys (big 3) play by themselves in the BIG truck market...

looks like a niche market that might just be pulled off! i'm sure the modern I4 will get the job done, these guys aren't dumb and i think everyone just wants more power for the sake of "having more power". but if the i4 diesel titan was still underpowered, then a dodge will get the job done, cummins wins both ways. was going to mention something about the NV but i think that was mentioned in the article. NV with a diesel will probably be a direct competitor to the dodge/benze diesel sprinter vans...? those tried and tested vans would be tough to beat though.

but hmmmm, cummins powered NV camper...now that would be nice.

btw, fronty, "frontiers" already come in diesel around the world except stupido n.america.

I have no experience with the Nissan diesel, so I don't know what's under the good already, but if they ever brought diesel to North America, they would simply bring what is already distributed in the rest of the world, not something different for North America.

That's depends, most "world" diesels don't meet North American emissions. We are also a rather unique market, basically we are power hungry and we are the only market for personal use full size trucks.

agreed, makes sense. the more i think about it, the more i'm diggin the idea and hoping Nissan can pull it off! you've got greek connections in the "titan" and "atlas" already, lol!. i have no experience with cummins but only know that they are one of the best n.american diesels around. i've drooled over early 90's dodge ram 2500s for a while, and i'm no powersmoke/ford fan just because..lol.

crew cab titan with diesel, mild lift, tko's, some armour, and a roof rack would be one helluva an expo/roady rig!

I'd hope it's in line with the Dodge pricing, ~$2800 over the Hemi.

Re: Fingers Still Crossed for Titan Diesel

that's it? guess i'm thinking about the much bigger diesels maybe...which is why some guys couldn't justify the cost of the diesel over the gasser cuz it would take such and such time to make up the savings in fuel costs..etc.. and mabye cuz they wanted THAT much more horse on the highway...

so this atlas is currently in what vehicle? or did i miss it.. there's a v6 in the ram 1500 and jeep..

anyway, sounds like a sweet little motor. i've driven 3 kinds of 4banger diesels (2.4 turbo in the old toyota hilux, 3.4 NA bombproof 3B landcruiser diesel, and currently a turbo/intercooled 2.8 in the mitsu van) and have been fine with them all, so i know what might be "underpowered" for most feels like, lol. these are older motors compared to the atlas which i'm sure will outperform them all on the dyno...which excites me a little. ;) i've always wanted a pickup truck.

The Atlas is currently and US Department of Energy Test Engine, fitted to as ZF 8-speed in a 2010 Nissan Titan. It is not currently available to the public. It is undergoing tests in 2014 for emissions certification etc. This may be a coincidence that the new 2015 Titan is also being released in 2014 (so the rumours say). Nissan is on record saying that they won't be the first diesel half-ton, but that when one of the big three "breaks the ice" they're ready.

The VM Motori A630 3.0l V6 is being sold as the EcoDiesel by Jeep in the 2013 Grand Cherokee and by RAM in the 2014 RAM 1500 ("available late 2013").

I'm sure you guys have probably seen this:
http://www.fourwheeler.com/news/1308-di ... 0-l-turbo/
Nissan teased us with announcements that the next-generation Titan would have more powertrain options, and now we’re seeing it come to fruition. A partnership between Cummins and Nissan has resulted in the optimization of a Cummins 5.0L V8 turbo diesel engine to be offered in the next-generation full-size Nissan Titan pickup. While we don’t know much about towing capacity and mileage yet, we do know that torque rating will be in the mid-500s (lb.ft.) with more than 300 horsepower. We were on-site for this announcement, which came this morning at the Nissan 360 event in Irvine, California. The Cummins 5.0L V8 will be built at the Columbus Engine Plant at the Cummins headquarters in Columbus, Ind. The next-generation Titan will be built at Nissan’s Canton, Miss. vehicle assembly plant.

Reports Fred Diaz, divisional vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing, Service & Parts, Nissan North America: “There is no question that the new Titan will turn heads, and with the available Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, we expect to win new fans and attract buyers looking for this unique configuration.”

forget the titan, its a POS

after owning the titan im turned off to nissan for ever, even if they put a diesel in it

the price tag will be way to much, and the fuel economy wont be good either

sorry im just annoyed with the titan
