R50 Battery Group Number?
FSM says my battery size is a 80D26R but I was expecting a group number and google didn't help me cross reference. I want to go an get an AGM battery what group size(s) do I need?? I know I can measure what is in it, but i thought someone here might know.
TIA

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
According to the CT website group 25 and 27 fit. But I'm pretty sure the 75/78DT one that fits in my wd21 would fit as well.

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
Exide also says 25 or 27, I installed a dual terminal red top in a buddies R50 years ago so I'll confirm its a good fit.
May I suggest - http://www.odysseybattery.com/batterysearch/
Picked mine up in Hamilton on Saturday from - http://www.odysseybattery.ca/
Battery Model 34-PC1500T
BCI Group Size 27
Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) 850
20Hr Nominal Capacity (Ah) 68
Reserve Capacity Minutes 135
Dimensions L x W x H - Inches 10.85 x 6.76 x 7.82
Metric Dimensions L x W x H - mm 275.6 x 171.7 x 198.6
Weight (lbs) 49.5
Weight (kg) 22.4
There is also a dual terminal 34/78-PC1500, with higher specs.
For considerably less, so far, I'm very pleased with our Exide Edge AGM in the XC90. Without a block heater it has started first try every day when temps have been -25 to -33. Exide (Sold at Partsource) battery finder

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
Thanks Adam. I went in to Partsource and got a similar answer but was told to "double check".
Josh, I heard those are good batteries but pricey? Our pathy is no work horse, just a family hauler. I was thinking about getting a basic AGM from parts source, I forget the brand.
Really, the basic interstate that is in it has lasted well. It came with the truck when we got it in '07 and it didn't look new then.

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
The Exide in the XC90 is the Exide Edge AGM form Partsource. I think I paid ~$165 before Christmas, which is slightly more than half what I just paid for my Odyssey.

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
The motomaster orbital extreme or whatever they call it now at CT is an exide. I have one in my pathy, I think pezzy, jayman, and a few others are running it too. Pretty sure we all have the same group one too.
I have the group 27 delco that came with my wd21 that works fine. If you were closer I'd just give it to you.

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
I have a spiral core eliminator from CTC in my truck. Doesn't sound the same. I guess I'll look on line.

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
I like the Exide just fine, as I said started first every time when temperatures were -25 down to -33 without a block heater. I can't comment on longevity though, its only a few months old.
My opinion on the orbital designs is that its old technology, and wastes space. All if the current "high end" / high capacity batteries have moved away from it to high density plates.

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
I thought part of the point of the spiral design was that plates close together were more likely to short to each other from build up (sulphating?). Wives tale?

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
Well the "wives tail" I've read is that EnerSys (Odyssey) developed the spiral cell technology, sold it to Optima and moved on to "better" designs.
This is the comparison I made when deciding years ago:
Optima Specs vs Odyssey
Cold Cranking Amps: 720 vs 810
Cranking Amps: 910 vs 1550
Nominal Voltage: 12 volts
Open Circuit Voltage (fully charged): 12.8 volts
Internal Resistance (fully charged): 0.0030 ohms
Capacity: 44 Ah (C/20) vs 68
Reserve Capacity: BCI: 100 minutes (25 amp discharge, 80°F (26.7°C), to 10.5 volts cut-off) vs 142
Also in my application the installation was simpler with the Odyssey.
Now comparing an Optima to the new consumer product AGM batteries is a different story. I'd say the Optima falls directly between the new consumer flat plate AGM batteries (Exide Edge, Eliminator, Duralast Gold, etc) and the premium flat plate / pure lead AGM Batteries (Exide Pure Lead Ultra Hight Performance, Eliminator Pure Lead, Odyssey, Stinger, etc).

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
Well I went to Partsource tonight. What a bunch of maroons. They had zero product knowledge of AGMs on their display rack. Didn't matter, they had none that would fit. Neither did the other store, nor ANY of the Canadian Tires in London. BTW, Canadian Tire has discontinued the trusty spiral core eliminator which was my back up. I called Costco and the guy in the auto shop had never even heard of AGM - when I asked if they carried AGM he said, "No, we have Kirkland" which is the Costco brand name.
I could have bought a cheap ass battery at Partsource or CTC for $100-120 but that isn't what I wanted. FFS I hate battery shopping. I thought I could spend $160-180 or so and get a half way decent battery in an Exide AGM or similar. Looks like my choices are bargain batteries or premium $200+ like a red top or whatever. SHoulda just started there in the first place I guess. /rant

That sucks...I'm curious now that they have discontinued the Spiral core one, what they would do if I need to make a warranty claim and want the same battery.Bow_Tied wrote:Well I went to Partsource tonight. My bet is you are SOL. They'd substitute what they think is their equivalent. I just bought one last year for the Z myself. :/

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
Frustrating.
Per the Exide Flate Plate AGM Brochure there is no BCI 27 application but there is a BCI 25. FP-AGM25: 650 CCA, 110 reserve, and 53 ah. From a quick search it looks like BCI 27 AGM batteries are limited to the "premium" units, so you're probably better off looking for a BCI 25 for this application.
Or walk in to Walmart a grab any one of the four or five Optima Red Tops off the shelf that fit, its still a darn good battery.

Yeah, I am liking that idea (other than supporting Walmart). I guess I'll need to see what pricing I can find....

It's hard not to in this case, pricing is good and they have them on the shelf.

Re: R50 Battery Group Number?
I ended up topping the old battery up with water and cleaning the connections (which were not bad). Battery seemd to come back strong until this weekend, would almost start but not quite. Easy boost. So it is now a fair weather battery at best. Started fine this morning but was on the block heater.
So I bought a new red top at lunch, found one for $189.99 at the local performance shop, so $~213 out the door.
Oddly, they don't charge the battery disposal fee with Optimas.

I love how they charge a disposal fee....Yet you can take them to AIM and get almost 10 dollars a piece for them...I should start collecting old batteries lol.
