Power Steering stiff

Post by Adam »

So sometimes my steering will just get really stiff, notice it mainly when I'm trying to park. It only does it sometimes. Fluid is good and full. I have tried popping it into neutral and bringing the rpms up but it didn't help. I don't hear any noise from the ps pump at all, and the last time I had the belt off it spun smooth and had no play. Anyone had this problem before? Do I just wait till it totally goes?

Try Lucas Power steering stop leak. It's actually pretty good stuff. It also works on hard spots and noise. Essentially, empty out your reservoir and fill with Lucas. My brother had a Taurus with a horribly loud PS pump and hard spots that quieted and smoothed out appreciably with this stuff.

Thanks, I'll try that this weekend! I noticed a weeping hose so I guess all the fluid will get changed.

There's a common leak under the reservoir - one of the hoses gets loose from its fitting. Happened to me last year. Tiny leak, barely noticeable, but the steering was all weird. I think I used a hose clamp to fix it.

Fixed the leak, dumped the whole bottle of lucas in. Seemed better for a couple of days. It did it again to me today. Noticed that if you roll forward a tad it steers fine again. Grease all the zerks thought something might be seized but no dice.
