Rear bumper repair

Post by Snafu »

Like most of us with older trucks the rear bumper becomes an eyesore. Anyone have some tips on cleaning it up?

I think the best would be to take it off, blast it then a proper paint job. Unfortunately I think that would take more than a day and I would like to have it done within the day.

Thoughts?

BTW I think the tow hitch would have to come off first in order to get access to the bolts holding onto the rear bumper.

Thanks

I've been using rocker guard in a spray can from Crappy Tire on all plastic bits. Works great on metal too, with the proper prep work. I just sand it down with a 180 attachable to the drill. The grinder is a little aggressive, even with a flap wheel. On the plastic it lasts like you wouldn't believe. Might be the perfect thing for your truck. It's occasionally on sale for $6- a can, but is usually around $12.

Thanks. I have a few cans kicking around that I used on the frame and under the wheel wells. Have to be careful which can you buy and use. I grab a few that were on sale and half were the non-paintable tar version. The labels look fairly similar

It is the pre that is going to be the fun part. I have a bit of OCD and would do the back side too. The problem is knowing half the bumper would be rusting too.

Have you tried any rust-converter/eliminator (phosphate based) as part of the prep?

Rust converter is an OK product. I used it a lot on sculptures when I worked for the city of Toronto. Outdoor steel stuff that were rusty. In vehicles the salt is the problem. And in my experience the conversion doesn't go deep enough to stop the rust from bleeding back up. Best to sand as much as possible - then maybe a brush of converter if you want to give it a shot.

I've got a can of the actual material that they do the spray bedliner with, comes in a can and you need a special gun to spray it.

My front bumper has some rust coming out that needs to be fixed and re-sprayed, and I'm thinking about doing the rear as well.

The back bumper should be easy, it's only held in with 4 bolts (2 if you've done a body lift) as long as nothing is siezed, should be able to have it off in 5-10 minutes, well within the 1 day guideline you set.

If you start early enough anthing can be done in a day lol.

I used the rocker guard on...wait for it...my rocker panels! It's held up great. No chipping or fading. But it's only been one year.

I did a test last fall. I painted the frame with black paint, one side I used an entire can of converter. Both sides are pretty equally rusted again this spring.

Yeah, I imagine if you cannot get the converter in deep enough then the rust can come back up. With a good sanding (grinding if needed) the converter should get at the rust well enough then etching primer on bare steel before painting.

I had a quick look and I think the trailer hitch is in the way of those four bolts. More than likely it will have to come off too but this is good as it too is in need of some work.

Hopefully after I rebuild the engine for the riding mower. Its connecting rod blew and almost threw it out the side (just a small crack in teh case to repair with epoxy)

I am thinking they would be more annoyed about the soda/dirt flying in the air than the noise.

Do you live in Timmins? Only a guy from a reserve would think that's OK.
