Dust shields on disk brakes

Post by Snafu »

I am doing the brakes on the truck and noticed that the dust shield (rear) is pretty much rotted.

Anyone try to replace it or did you just rip it off because it is useless?

Replacing it does not look like an easy option unless I just cut the bad off and rivet a new one to the remains of the old.

If you've got it torn down to the spindle, it's very little extra work from there.

Down side is they would have to be ordered.

Just have the rotors off. I think the next step would be to pull the e-brake bits to get at the bolts holding on the shield. Anything wrong without them?

I am leaving what remains on the truck but I don't think they will survive after next winter

This the rears? Can't speak to the X but my truck the shield is circular and doesn't fit over the axle flange - meaning you have to pull the axle. :irked: I just cut it off as I figured I'd get into replacing axles seals or goodness knows what not to mention a fluid swap. I will likely wait to do this a the next fluid maintenance interval. If I do so, I will POR 15 the new shields first!

Yes, this is on the rears (fronts are tomorrow's 8 hour job). It looks like the shield is between the axle and the backing plate for the e-brakes. Not sure if it has to come apart or if the shield will slip out with loosened bolts. Not even sure the FSM talks about this...probably better to look at parts picture.

BTW I had to use a puller to get the disk off the driver's side. It was seized on good and too two tries as part of the rotor chipped off on the first attempt!

One of mine fell off on the road last summer. I never replaced it and I don't really care. This is the front. The rears on mine are surprisingly clean with little to no rust at all. Shocking.

The ones on mine are held in with 10mm bolts. 100% chance of those breaking!

Some vehicles come with dust shields, some do not, so the benefit of them is debatable, however if the vehicle was manufactured with them, I heard they must be present for a safety. I have heard of a few instances where vehicles fail a safety because of this missing/ damaged part of the braking system, even before the new rules came into effect. How will they know which vehicles do and don't have them? Generally they don't, unless it is a dealer, however if one is present, and one isn't, that's a dead give away.

On the jeep I pulled the fronts years ago with as far as I can tell zero repercussions. The brakes work fine no matter how hard it's raining so I see no issues. I left the rears as they hold the ebrake shoes.

On the rears it looks like there is a separate plate for the ebrakes. I presume the shield is mainly to keep water off the rotors and the rim does the same on the other side.

Now having fun with a seized slider and can't find my map-gas...doh!

Stoopid rubber thingies on the sliders. Seized like a MF'r. Had to heat the bracket until the rubber melted. Why or why do they insist on these things?

Ah, my brain was thinking front not rear...

I've seen them removed (cut) and no real issues.
