Right on guys, Geeze Jay, I guess letting Scotto drink your beer in your driveway isn't so bad after all.
Only in Elora, would a NAPA guy think a battery lead would be from a tractor first? he will probably be the first lad to get lost on the round a bout.

Re: Starter issues
CRAP! From cold the X really didn't want to start this morning, and it wasn't that cold out. I will plug it in and fire it up sometime this afternoon and see if that helps, But I am thinking in really cold temps, the starter might be showing some fatigue?

Re: Starter issues
Very possible... but I bet your battery has not been getting the charge it should have if the cable connections were questionable. Have you now cleaned all the conections (Battery/starter/alternator)? You need to take it for an hour drive on the highway to charge it up I think.

Re: Starter issues
I ran the X for about an hour or so tonight driving around here and there, so I will try it again from cold tomorrow. If I remember too, I will get some audio and post it up.
All connections were cleaned up to the best of our ability.

Re: Starter issues
How old is the battery? My Protege (a 2003) did a similar thing for the last couple months of 2008. It gradually cranked slower and slower until eventually it wouldn't start. Replaced the battery, and I thought the starter would spin the engine off its mounts. The difference was very noticeable.

From my first post:

Re: Starter issues
Since the problem is certainly cold-weather related, I'm starting to lean towards a tired starter. I know you said it's only a year and a bit old, but maybe it's not the best... I went though three starters on the Jeep one year (but that's a GM product - notoriously bad starters...)
I'm still just guessing here - but I can't see how that ground wire could still be a problem, or the battery, or even the lead to the starter, I think they are all good. Which leaves one possibility... the starter.

Re: Starter issues
^ I'll second that. I've chased all kinds of problems because I didn't want to believe a part that _shouldn't_ be bad, was.

Re: Starter issues
I may just have to admit that it could very well be the starter. The last 2 mornings when i drive down to Tim's for my morning coffee, I have been getting an odd metal on metal squealing sound when I hit the gas pedal, but it stops if I let off, or goes away after it goes in to second gear.
Wonder if that could be the starter or the hubs, which would coincide with my other issue, my 4WD?

Re: Starter issues
hey jay, i just read this thread over on 4x4parts.com website. I am going to try the fix on my truck and see what happens. I don't know if yours suffers from the same 'common' problem that auto tranny wd21's do, but it might be worth a shot. He is basically skipping the stock relay and associated wiring by the sounds of it.

it seems to have solved quite a few people's problems and the symptoms are the exact same as what I am going through atm
when i gets warm enough, i'll give it a shot and let you know if it works. I'll be kinda pissed if it stops it, but at least ill have a spare starter right

Re: Starter issues
Yeah man, for sure let me know. I will go have a read and see whats up!
Having a spare Alty and Starter are almost mandatory when you get to the wheeling stage that you are at.
Did you order that other mod by the way?

Re: Starter issues
That fix is, if I understand it, the Ford style starter system design. Chevy guys have using that fix for years to help out the stock starter solenoids that were heat soaked from headers.
