Got a trailer - canned ham!

Post by Bow_Tied »

Ok, no longer need to be a kijiji whore.

This weekend we bought an older trailer. It needs a fair amount of work, not in as nice of condition as Feds I think. It has an area at the rear that has water damage. I will need to repair the leak (rear window) and tear out the back panels and replace some wood. It also needs to be painted on the outside to be fully presentable. The PO repainted it about 10 years ago. Not sure if I can repaint this year or not. My wife wants to redo the upholstery, but it could likely do for a little bit. Thre is a laundry list of little things, not the least of which is a thorough cleaning and adding a brake controller and a 7 pin harness to at least one of our trucks.

Not real pretty, but a neat starter trailer. We kinda fell in love with the woodwork, and some of the little things.

Thanks, that is great link, there might be the odd thing I will get there like window gaskets.

I am not really sure. The o/s says 780kg, but I suspect it is more. I would like to get it weighed to be sure.

VERY Cool! And looks to be about the same shape as mine (amazing what you can find with a few weeks of inspection :roll: )

I priced out some foam and upholstery for mine. I figure about $400 for new everything in the whole trailer, and more than half of that is foam. I did find a foam wholesaler in Fenwick (God bless this town!), so I will update the price when I contact them.

My trailer is on hold for now, pending my getting of a job, but I am looking forward to seeing how yours comes along.

Thanks! I figure it is ok for $900 delivered.

I am very interested to hear more about the foam - my wife wants to redo our upholstery at some point. While it is not bad (after washing the covers) the original stuff at the dinette was thicker and vinyl covered.

I order some 1/8" birch veneer plywood today and hope to get the wheels off soon for replacements.

I have gone through the trailer lights and after figuring the adapter I bought was not grounded and replacing a couple of corroded bulbs, things seem to work well enough. The bike rack at the back the PO put lights on are wonky and the 3rd brake light is actually a taillight, so a couple things there yet.

I still need to:
Install brake controller in the truck
get a small water tank
repair the water damage at rear window
install a 12V system
replace carpet with vinyl flooring (found some nice easy to install stuff @ HD)
new propane tank
new propane/CO2 detector
repair entry step
service brakes (hopefully that is all they need)
general inspection

future
replace crappy brass cupbaord hardware and light fixtures :rasp:
maybe? buy a bar fridge (just a large icebox for now) - they are $50 @ princess now....
get some stuff keyed alike (5 differnt keys now)

Question:
All of the tires on my trailer are dated coded 1998. The spare was kept inside the trailer and was never used (still blue on the whote letters). Think it is ok to keep using as a spare? The main tires have 500, maybe 1k miles on them, but I am going to replace them anyway for sure. Oh, and white letters out, right? ;)

From what I've read about the tire issue, they suggest replaceing un-used tires every 6 years, due to the rubber drying out or something like that.

Of course, there are varying opinions on that timeframe, and I know I've seen tons of trailers with old OLD tires on them, doing just fine.

If it's in the budget, I'd replace them just for piece of mind.

I had heard the 6 year thing too. I have been doing some more research, the answer to this post seems to address my issue:
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Tires-2359/D ... f-Life.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

However, look long enough and you find conflicting information everywhere: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/ ... techid=138&" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I know what the safe answer is, dang it.
