Servicing electric trailer brakes

Post by Bow_Tied »

Other than the typcial drum brake service, is there anything special to do to electric brakes? Clean the magnet? I have never had any before and this trailer had all new brakes 10 years ago but has been sitting. I am confortable with drum brakes on a car, but this is new to me. Any tips appreciated.

Thanks Feds. Interesting read, picked up a couple things there.

I found after reading a bit more and talking with a trailer shop owner that really, if the magnet holds a wrench when activated and wires are good, there is not much else one can do beyond visual inspection. It turns out I have an old style Hayes brake magnet which are getting harder to get anymore. The newer ones are the Dexter style.

I installed all new bearings, even new cups and grease seals, and adjusted the brakes and took it for a drive tonight. Worked great. Really liking the brake controller I got. Hope I am good to go now.
