Burlington - Xterra Owner

Post by xxvann »

I recently found out about this site from National 4WD. I work around the corner from them.

I've got a mechanically stock 2006 Xterra S (5-sp auto), in metallic blue. It was a US truck that I picked up in Nov 2006 with 15,000 miles on the clock. The first thing I did was get rid of the POS BFG Long Trail TA rubber and put on some Pirelli Scorpion ATR (upsized to 275/70-16) and a Hidden Hitch (for my bike rack). Next up I installed the following audio gear:
- Alpine IDA-x100 head
- Alpine BT400 bluetooth
- KTX-H100 sound processor
- iPod 160GB Classic
- Boston Acoustics Pro 6.53 in custom dash pods and door panels
- JL Audio 300/2 v2 amp
I recently ordered a pair of Treo TE10 dual 4-ohm voice coil 10" subs and a Treo RSX1900 (900 watt mono) amp.

I have owned my truck for a couple of yrs now but never took it into anything more some a couple of feet of snow and some sand dunes, near Ipperwash Beach/Grand Bend.

I've been part of the Toronto F-body Motorsports club (Firebirds and Camaro owners and associates) since 1998, when I got my TA. I'm also a long standing member of LS2.com (a US-based Camaro/Firebird/Corvette forum), Camaroz28.com, LS1Tech.com, LSFFA.com (a local enthusiast board), CamaroCountry, KWMuscle, VWVortex, etc etc.

As a complete novice to off roading I will definitely follow the advice of anyone who has previous experience, and have been looking for a local (Ontario) board that discussses off-roading, modding SUVs, get togethers to discuss common interests etc etc. Its actually kind of refreshing to be "the new guy" since I've been on so many other boards for so long.

Looking forward to meeting you fellows!

Mike...

Welcome to the MOD squad :teeth: Since it sounds as if you are already bitten, this could be a dangerous adventure for you. If you plan on taking your nice rig off the beaten path a bit, a second set of rims and some all terrain tires are key(edit:disregard, I just searched the ATRs and they apparently will do the trick ;)) , removal of any bolt on mud flaps and step rails too. Sounds like the important sound system mods are well taken care of so....

enjoy

Thanks for the warm welcome. Here are a couple of pix, incl. bike rack (not me in the pic):

A blue xterra!!! Welcome to the club!

The mod bug is dangerous... Sounds like you've got a serious sound system, awesome. How's the pirelli doing on your truck? Pirelli ATR and Mud Terrain were in my options when I was shopping for tires.

Yes, I caught it severely with my Trans Am. I added a Ram Air hood and air box, headers, cat-back exhaust, bigger brakes, bigger rims/tires, 1600w of Rockford Fosgate stereo and overbored the motor. That was fun.

Yes, it definitely makes for enjoyable road trips.

I got the ATRs in Dec 2007 just before the snow came. They've been a great tire so far. They chew through all kinds of snow, were only slightly louder than the Long Trails on the highway, work great in the wet (although now they are getting a bit slippy around town, which I noticed this week when we had a big rain). They have about 40% tread left. I'll drive them through the winter and see how they work but I am confident they will still be OK. Next summer I will likely replace them.

I'm very impressed with the brakes. I have 75,000 miles (not KM) on the original rotors and pads and they still seem to be going strong.

Problems so far: I had the front airbag sensor replaced, under a recall; the entire rear end was replaced under warranty because it developed gear noise; the driveshaft recently took a dump and had to be replaced as well, but that came out of my own pocket. The front section is a standard U joint, which was fine. The rear section is a CV joint, which wore out. NIssan wanted $775 for the part so I did some looking online and found a scrap yard in Minnesota that had a low mileage shaft for $175USD incl. shipping. It arrived, I put it on in 15 mins and problem solved!

Overall experience so far: this has been exactly what I was looking for. I always liked the Xterra ever since the 1st gen came out, and when the 4.0L V6 model was released in 2005 it looked even better, so I had to get one.
