Bad Whine After Deep Water Crossing??

Post by superchargedx »

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if any of you have run into this on your xterra's after a deep water crossing.....
Day after (water crossing) i have a very loud whine especially at idle??
I thought at first it must be my alternator, but is charging fine and noise seems to be coming from idler/adjuster pulleys??
Kind of hard to tell because the noise travels through the whole area!!
Any help would be very much appreciated as my....LOL....very pregnant wife also drives my truck at times

Thanks Guys,

Sean

The last time i heard a noise like you are describing it was in fact my alternator. After doing several mud runs and deep water crossings i finally pooched it.

You can remove your alternator belt and see if that stops some of the noise (as a test, not a fix haha) but chances are you did all your idler pulleys, and possibly your bearings in the Alty. Just hope its not the AC compressor bearing, its really hard to change ;-)

Well, I farted around with it at work today...Turns out I did fry the alternator :stickwack:
Got a rebuild and put it in at work this morning, now is all good again! Cost me $170 for the part...

How the hell do you guys get around cooking the alt every time you go through deep water??????
Any tips would be great, told the wife the alt failure had NOTHING to do with me going wheeling
She may not buy it next time!!! HAHAHA

Thanks again in advance,

Sean

Hope, prayers, and lots of water to rinse the alty out. That and WD 40 or equivalent to help dispell the water that tries to get in.

The main problem is the rear bearing is a needle roller and the grease is easily washed out and replaced with mud, sand, dead frogs, etc. WD 40 doesn't protect against that. It atually gives dirt and debris something to stick to. You need to get an alternator with sealed bearings front and rear to keep shite out

Geoffrey (aka Scotto) has a good "how to" prep an alternator for off roading. Give it a read.
Bad Whine After Deep Water Crossing??
The answer though is really easy! Toss your passenger out the door when crossing water. Their whining will stop!
