What causes "sticky" brakes

Post by ckc123 »

I have a 2010 SE, which has started a weird problem recently.. after driving 10-15 mins, if the vehicle is stopped, when I let go of the brakes if feels "sticky" like it's stuck "on" for a split second, and there is a "groan". visually looking at the pad, there is lots left.

any idea on the cause/fix?

Could be a few things. Check the sliders on the calipers for lube, and make sure everything is moving freely. Everything is fine in that regard, it could be a plunger on the caliper that's partially seized, and not releasing when fluid pressure (the pedal) is released.

X2 When mine did this it was the slide pins that needed lube. Also there is this stuff that came with my new brake pads that goes on the back of the back like between the caliper piston and the pad, after putting this stuff on I never had the groaning problem again!

If they need lube, whats the proper type to use? I'm assuming I can get some at a place like canadian tire /autopro?

Make sure you get a lube that is specifically made for brakes. They are usually synthetic and won't cause the rubber to swell.

I bought Permatex Disc Brake Caliper Lube at Canadian Tire but I can't find it on their web site.

Just a question, if it's an '10 wouldn't you want to take it into the dealer and chase down some warranty action? Pistons and sliders shouldn't be siezed up that quickly.

^^ agree with taking it to the dealer for 2010 truck. Unless you have put on enough miles that warrant new brakes or abused the heck out of them there really shouldn't be a problem.

yup, X3...warranty that sucker. I've had lots of issues with my 06's brakes. 3 sets of pads in a year. the slide pins stick really easy, causing my inside pad to wear way quicker since it's always rubbing on the rotor. Warped my OE rotors so now I disassemble and clean the calipers in regular intervals. I wheel probably 60% mud trails though, doesn't help at all.

I talked to the dealership and service of the sliders is not covered under warranty. regardless of mileage or when it needs to be done, it's considered "regular maintenance" and is not covered.

True.

Maintenace of the sliders is exactly that.. Maintenance.

The hydraulic piston is covered against siezing, and the caliper it's self is covered for leaks or manufacturing defects for 3 years or 60,000km. The sliders themselves need to be inspected every 12,000km, and serviced as required (usually every 24,000km) under normal driving conditions (ie: not offroading)

Is there an easy way to service them myself without removing them?

There's no grease nipple on your air filter either, but let's wait to see what the guy from jeep kings has to say...

Well done. :worthy:

Sorry man, brakes are maintenance. Unless there was catastrophic failure, no warranty covers this. Sticky slide pins are just that....sticky. They need lubrication. That's your responsibility, whether you do it yourself, or pay someone else.
