Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
85km drive today, 50/50 and a 10 min timmies drivethru- 12.5/100. Pretty cold in Ottawa today too. If you're smelling raw gas there is something wrong. Maybe you have a sticky injector?
Hey Bender are the brochure mileage figures not based on Imperial gallons?

for example, if I got 18.82mpg (US) today, it works out to 22.6 miles per Imperial gallon.

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
hey, so your assumptions are based on the onboard compuper? ever tried using a trusty GPS to calculate mileage? i can never trust what the manufacturers put in .xkursion wrote:You may have a theory from the open loop. I wonder if the tables it uses internally are programmed on "learned". Maybe the combo of the truck being new and not broken in are yielding higher than average fuel burn based on inadequate data in the tables.
I know what the rated city mileage, but I do some "highway" style driving thrown it, so I was expecting to get somewhere in there. Based on fueleconomy.gov's reported "real world average" users report 17-19 mixed use. I know this is without cold, and new, etc, etc.
Well I'll hope for the best, not like I'm giving it back... love this truck. Just a little concerning to sit at a stop light and see the avg l/100km climb ... 17.4.... 17.5.... 17.6 lol
Can anyone chime in with what they're getting on their 05+ frontier v6.
funny about mileage claims in canada, anyone see that story on the news maybe last week on how canadian auto industry are waaaaay overexaggerating their vehicles gas mileage's?! i know they are now considering changing their test protocols/standards to match the american's which are a little closer to reality.
anyway, g'luck on the mileage improvement!

Also noticed that when I turn the ventalation system to the off position, there is quite a bit of seepage through the vents, as soon as you turn the blower on it stops.
Don't think it's related though.

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
17 mpg is what i get all the time loaded or empty 2001 S10 ZR2, it will likely take more than 1000kms for the motor to loosen up. mine took about 25000 to wear in. its funny how the new big trucks get way better milage than the small ones. oh well i didnt buy a truck for fuel economy, i bought it for its off road capabilitys. i suspect that was high on your list too, those are nice trucks.

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
I'm going through the same thing. I recently sold my 2000XE 6 cylinder 4x4 and bought a 2011 SV 4x4. The old truck consistently got around 15L/100 km but the new one seems to be getting worst with each tank:
Tank 1 - 14.9
Tank 2 - 15.4
Tank 3 - 15.6
Tank 4 - 18.2
Tank 5 - 19.2
I did change out the tires to general grabber AT2'S at the beginning of the 2nd tank which explains some of the jump, but the massive increase in consumption the last 2 tanks is crazy....

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
I'm still on tank 2, reset my calculator and I'm at around 16.4 with around 100k on it.
You can definitely tell the cold sucks the gas right out of the tank. You can visibly see the gauge drop, once the truck warms up it barely moves. Time to start using the block heater.

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
It's Knight Armor, so a really dark gray. I was there on Friday, so likely if it was a Crew-Cab Pro4X that was me.
Just picked it up after they had to fix a few things, namely the stickers that were peeling off an a small scratch on the door.

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
Just keeping everyone updated. Just over 1100km on the truck now and still getting 17-17.5 L/100km.
The cold KILLLLSSS this truck, you can literally watch the gauge drop. I'm sure I burn at least 5 litres of fuel in the first 4 minutes of driving. After the truck warms up it seems to do ok.
I got stuck in traffic the other day and watched the avg creep up to the high 18's ... ouch! less than 300km on my last tank. (filled up with just over 1/8 tank left).
Oh... and Happy New Year everyone!

Man, that is some bad mileage. I got better towing a 4500lb trailer on Friday with my 3.0 pathfinder!

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
Just got back from a trip to a friend's cottage, 500km trip mostly highway and back road driving, averaged 14.5 l/100km.
On the way home tried some things on the highway, weird results. Do these RPM readings seem typical for the speeds?
Cruise at 100 - 15 l/100km @ 2000 RPM
Cruise at 115 - 13.5 l/100km @ 2100 RPM
Cruise at 120 - 16 l/100km @ 2200 RPM

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
Tough time of the year to get a real idea of your averages till the truck is over 10,000km and it warms up a little (spring). Sorry, that is worse than my 2011 5.7 TuRD with BFG ATs and similar to Adam / WD21. Not sure what you have for tires (OEM) or anything covering the bed? I've lived in a few cities - IMO daily driving in Ottawa sucks gass. All the best, Dan.

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
Man I feel your pain. I'm still getting poor mileage too:
Tank 6: 19.7
Tank 7: 17.4
Tank 8: 17.8
I've driven trucks my whole driving career, and when u own a truck you have to expect a bigger fuel bill but I've got buddies driving massive dodge rams getting better mileage.
hope it gets better with break in.

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
Yeah that sounds a little to thirsty, for comparison, on my 05' I average 14.5 - 15 HWY and 16-17 City. (Note: 4-5" lift, exposed front tires, BFG AT's, bolt on eng. mods) Also, I definitely get better mileage on 91. If you filled up on premium and reset your ECU I'd be willing to bet you a coffee the few extra $$ for premium gas would pay for itself in better mileage.
ECU Resetting Procedure
When counting, count in your head or use a stop watch.
1. Turn ignition to ON, count to 3.
2. Depress/Release accelerator pedal 5 times ... hard and fast
3. Count to 10 and fully DEPRESS pedal.
4. Count to 12 (SES should be blinking), RELEASE pedal.
5. Count to 10, DEPRESS pedal.
6. Count to 10, RELEASE pedal.
7. Turn off ignition, then start engine, DONE!"

those RPM's are bang on same as mine. Mileage, not so much. I got 12.5 coming back from smiths falls the other day when it was minus stupid out, averaged around 115xkursion wrote:Just got back from a trip to a friend's cottage, 500km trip mostly highway and back road driving, averaged 14.5 l/100km.

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
Hey man, is your mileage getting any better?
Mine is still terrible.
Tank 9: 18.3
Tank 10: 21.3
I'm to the point where it's probably cheaper to hire a limo to cart me around. This thing is going back to the dealer for a check over...there has to be something wrong...

Re: Mileage - Help, freaking out a little
Two things really affect my mileage with my new truck. One of them is road conditions (slippery or dry), and the other is the fuel I am using. Ive been pumping half tanks with and without ethanol (shell 91 doesn't have any in it, but ask first). I notice I get consistently better results with the ethanol-free fuel, highway or city. It only seems to make a big difference in the winter, I am estimating about a 20% difference, so compare your results. I've got a 5-speed and I am getting ~13l/100km without ethanol and closer to 16 with it. That's buzzing down the highway @ 3k rpm
