Air Box Mod. R50

As you all know, I hydrolocked my vehicle a couple weeks ago. So now I'm taking steps to keep that from happening again, until I get to the point in the mod-list when the Snorkel resides (its about 4 mods away on the list)
Anywho, I rerouted the intake on the air box to go from the basic "straw in the beverage" position to a "high and dry" position. The only thing I'm worried about is the fact I'm sucking hot air now from the engine bay. On the other hand, the original resonator box was restrictive as h*ll compared to this.

I moved the box forward... extended one, and removed the other mounting point.



The inlet now comes out the back of the box instead of the bottom.

Lemme know if this is a horrible mistake or if it should suffice until snorkel time :-D

I plugged the old one with a cap and put silicone around it. Then just sealed the "new" extension with silicone as well. there wont be any water getting sucked in at the bottom anymore. I'm worried about it going up and over the hood and being sucked in as it comes down the seam between the windshield and hood.
And no, the Trailer Hitch Ball gun is still in one piece. :-D

Hot air will help your fuel mileage and hurt your power. Looks good though.

I wouldn't be worried about the water coming in through the seam, it will just run down the fender flange towards the headlight, and stream off the sides by the fuse box or down by the headlight; the water doesn't really have anywhere to pool and certainly not enough volume to go up and in. You may suck in aerosol from all the water that gets thrown around under hood by the mechanical fan every time it dips into the water though. You should be fine.

As for the hot air of the engine bay, yeah it is probably not going to be as cool as the in-fender air, but look at all the fast and furious boys running around with cone filters in the engine bay...it's no different.

Good job man! I think the only way you're going to get water in that tube is if you submarine your truck up to the fuse box! Only then will it take another "sip". You'll just have to resist no matter how much your beast is telling you to "go further".

I'm going to try the air box mod on the death hole! But ging the other way so the air box is a little higher up in the puddle :-D

What did you do with the sensor or whatever it is on the resonator box? Did you just cut the resonator out or leave it in the fender well?

I didn't have to cut the bad boi. I just removed three or four bolts (and the sensor) and the thing just pulled down. I was thinking I should reinstall the sensor in the new inlet pipe. But instead I just left it in the fender wall for now

You should find a way to put that sensor back into the air intake flow, even if you have to modify the harness.

It tells the ECM what the air temperature going into the engine is, and adjusts fuel mixtures accordingly.

Probably won't cause much problem now, but when it's -20C out, and you're sucking that warm engine air in, and the ecm is reading the air as -20, the engine will run rich.

I was thinking about doing something similar, but I thought I may take it as far as using a hole saw and running it right into the wiper cowl, that way you're still getting the cooler air, but you're up about as high as you'd dare to go into water without a proper snorkel.

Will do! I was going to put it in the new pipe, but it got late. If it makes that much of a difference I'll do it. Seems easy enough. I kept all the rubber bungs and whatnot.
Sandor mentioned running it up into the cowl, but I've seen some water go up over the hood/windshield and drain down into there. So I figured this would do until the ACTUAL snorkel made its way into my possession.

Ya, I wouldn't panic, the sensor won't make much of a difference till the weather really changes anyway.

I have an R50 as well, and i put in a cold air intake. What i did with the sensor was i mounted it somwhere close to where the filter was drawing in air that way it would read relatively the same temp as what the filter was acutally bring in. So i would suggest mounting it next to your tube opening, dont even worry abour having to modify your new tube to fit the sensor in. Good work though any change to the stock intake is better for that truck..... i dont know what they were thinking when they set up this its intake

I think it may be a piece of Honda civic intake attached to some Nissan pipe
