CEL Miracle

Post by Scotto »

Truck has had a 1490 code forever. It's a grounding issue somewhere, and I finally gave up tracking it down.

So, this morning, I fired up the truck and - for the first time in about two years - the CEL was not on. No codes. Stopped for coffee, turn truck off/on. Still no light. By the time I got to work the thing was in Ready mode. We'll see if this lasts.

So one of the senior engineers at work stops me today, he too has an older Volvo. Two years ago the car failed its E-test, needed cat or cats. Yesterday it passes the new E-test, with a check engine light on apparently an O2 sensor due to the bad cats.

Not sure what this means as to pass - fail criteria but its good to know that a check engine light isn't an automatic fail.

Truck passed the e-test for the first time in 4 years. CEL was going off and on for the last few weeks. Seems to be a temp and humidity thing - likes it when it's about 4*C and damp. Today was perfect.

As an aside - the knock sensor will not fail the test (for those that haven't relocated it.). The CEL needs to be off and the truck in READY mode - the KS doesn't trip the light so it doesn't matter.

Scott.

Good to know. My friend just inherited an X from his grandparents, and I warned him about the knock sensor issues. He said it passed so that's good.
