Favourite tools for the garage
What's a tool that everyone should have in the garage?
I love the 1/2" impact gun (110v electric). Never have to worry about waiting for more air to run the air-impact gun.
I came across BenchtopPRO parts cleaner. Looks very interesting. Pricey but interesting.
Uses microbes to eat up the grease and oil

Re: Favourite tools for the garage
Thanks to my bud Rob I got one similar to this today:
Other tools I find I use a lot or are very handy:
bent tip needle nose, that bent tip comes in so handy.
a dental mirror
distributor wrench
tap and die set w/ machinist bits
lots of socket size adpaters such as 3/8x1/2 or 3/8x1/4 - a pair of opposites can make a very short socket extension for times when a deep socket or std short extension are too long.
A roofing magnet (long handle with wheels). I ALWAYS drop and effing screw or bolt and it ALWAYS rolls all the way underneath to the centre of the of car I am working on. Also helps in clean up for other projects.

What works better then any penetrating oil or heat? The word F*CK! No stuck part stands a chance. F*CK gets it free, lines it up or sticks it together. Best tool in my Tool box.... F*CK. I use it elsewhere too. Feeling stressed out, nothing like a good F*CK to relieve that tension. See! Works for everything! F*CK you WD-40.

Cant argue with your first choice Snafu. I too love the 110volt CrappyTire impact gun. I've got one of the first ones and the thing wont die. Channel Lock brand anything pliers as well. They take a pretty good beating and last unlike others. HOTWOD I think its time for some anger management, but then I'd be probably be there right beside you lol. I can relate. Scott, it's "F*UCK ME GENTLEY" that gets it unstuck for me. lololol

Re: Favourite tools for the garage
I'm usually the favourite *tool* in the garage most of the time...
Seriously though, purchasing my compressor made a whole lot of jobs easier, and not only on my vehicles. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you have access to compressed air. Need to clean some dust out of a fan? No problem.
The arsenal of pneumatic tools that I've scrounged together makes a big difference as well.
If you want specific to my Xterra though, my favourite tool would have to be the ball joint separator. With the number of times you have to do work on the front suspension on the X, that tool is a MUST.

Re: Favourite tools for the garage
I just got an air compressor for christmas, I think it will become of my favorite tools other than my MIG welder. The welder has made so many things easier/more doable at home. Like dealing with rounded nuts and bolts, broken exhaust and mounts. Just a few zaps and done. I can also make/modify tools to suit my needs.
A specific tool for my truck (works for the xterra/fronty as well) is the bearing locknut tool. Don't have to guess at the torque with a hammer and screwdriver which destroys the holes in the nut.

Re: Favourite tools for the garage
Jayman reminded me - a pnuematic ball joint separator was the most awesome thing I ever used when I did the front springs on my Chevelle last year.

Re: Favourite tools for the garage
In all honesty this is my favourite tool
It goes with my everywhere and it plays along no matter what I'm working on. It's tough as hell, can work on 120v or battery, and has a 12v out charging port if you need it. On top of everything it sounds half descent too. The bottle opener on the back is just icing on the cake.
it might be just me but all jobs seem more enjoyable / less frustrating when you have some tunes to sing along to. Don't look at me funny, you know you do it too.

^^ What he said! ^^
With all the time I've spent in the garage lately, the jukebox is the only reason I haven't lost my mind yet. Working on a 22 year old vehicle sure has its share of challenges!
Which reminds me I should start up a build thread on here as well...

To lift, or not to lift? What a stupid question...

Haha, you are totally right. I was eyeing these guys for a while but couldn't justify the $200 price tag. Home depot dropped them to $99 recently and I was all over it. It replaced my full stereo in the garage, saving a tonne of space. I love the portability, ability to charge your phone, and especially the built in bottle opener (which would have been better placed in the front). My only other gripe is that you can't charge your cordless batteries using the stereo while plugged in. I guess that is because dewalt patented that tech...

Re: Favourite tools for the garage
Well with being on the road with the army, and now living in an appartment, my garage is the truck. Favorite tools would either come down to the 1750w inverter and/or the 18w corless Dewalt tools I carry. My tool kit it well equipped, but nothing special in terms of a good selection of sockets, screw drivers, and wreches (and I keep my impact socket set in there too). I've been able to do repairs and maintenance like brakes, wheel bearings and even replacing the entire spindle assembly (just missing the big ass socket for the ball joint)
We ran a few runs of Cat5 to the garage while we ran new (and a larger) service underground (rather than overhead) to the (detached) garage. The old stereo in there went, so decided to pick up a cheap Xbox 360 and run a Media Center Extender from the server in the house. Great for music, mp3s, movies, tv and downloaded tv series. My dad's "Man Cave" is coming along nicely
