Good times :(
Took the miss' fishing yesterday up some fire road to a hydro electric damm. Stopped for a smoke in the way out and happened to look at my Princess Auto scan gauge thingie and seen the vtage at 12 volt +/- . Ok not comforting. Made it outta the trail no problems. Dropped Becky off in Oakville and as soon as I pulled out battery and ebeake light start doin the funky chickin. Reading 12 volts and dropping. Pinned it. Tryed to race home, but "ol grey" died on the highway. 1:00 am goody. Thank god it didn't happen up Nord. I've swapped the alternator before with ol grey and had similar symptoms with the ol rig. (96 Hardbody right in front of the old Dermac thank god) so I knew what was to do. Not a bad job but always crappy in this weather. A few pics.

The culprit. FYI after 11.2 volts VQ40's don't operate so good

Glad yer getting 'er done. I don't know why Nissan likes to put alternators down low like that, not looking forward to the day the pathfinder needs one.

It's beyond me. But I guess if I designed a vechile from a computer I'd do the same That's sarcasm by the way. Real world vs. Book world. Yup good idea.

The designers are likely held accountable to make the engines using common bracketry for as many platforms as possible. A lot of bad designers are due to constraints leadership places on their design team.

Glad you are back together.
Those are huge locks.
Automotive engineers should put in a year or two as a mechanic before they should be allowed to design a car. Things would change pretty quick

Copy that, won't start won't run with sub-nominal voltage. Makes these new motors almost impossible to boost.PiDGE wrote: The culprit. FYI after 11.2 volts VQ40's don't operate so good

Re: Good times :(
What a bummer man! I'm on my 5th or 6th alternator, they seem cut cut out a day or so after getting wet but Iguess I've been lucky. Wish someone could come out with a better design. Ahh well at least you got the miss' home!

Re: Good times :(
Hey Miner, it would idle, but would not accelerate. I was humming along tryin to get home and she just bogged right down. I pulled over and let it sit and idle for a while till I finally turned it off. I always take the spare alt. with me, but this time I left it home. Not like I woulda swamped it on the side of the 410 at 1:00am anyways. Just glad it happened where it did. Woulda sucked to have to call someone to bring tools and spare alt Yeah this ones only a couple years old. I took the stock unit off cause it had a bad bearing and had it rebuilt for a spare $130 for a rebuild vs $400ish for new. So the stock rebuilt one is back on working (14.2 volts running) and gotta get the other one rebuilt again. Rebuilder is over by Princess Auto Mississauga FYI. Anyone wants the exact address post up or pm me. Now that I think about it that's 2 alts done in from the ColdWater area
