Front Locker $299 (2nd gen X)

Post by Xtrapol8 »

There is something available on http://www.thenewx.org that seems fantastic, but many of you would know better than I would.

I'm just posting this to get the word out there in case someone is interested. There's a 2 week window. Shipping from Australia is included.

Here's the link http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78314.

If you can't see it for some reason, let me know and I'll try something else.

Neat. I shared in on a Patrol forum. Anyone put it on NPORA yet?

I am not sure of full-time locker on the front.

Not great for a daily driver maybe.

That is what I was thinking. For a dedicated rig it would be great.

I'm not even sure sure a dedicated locker on the front is a good idea. Turning radius falls off dramatically.

Well, understandably none of us is confident that the X and the Lokka will play nicely togehter in the winter. We wish they would, but ther is no proof - no video evidence, no reports of it ever being tried in the snow. On thenewX.org a member named NixX (of Fall City, Washington) has had one installed for several months now and was going to go (up into the mountains) to play in the snow and report pack. He hasn't posted yet. I hope he's alright. Maybe we'll get something from him in the next few months as a litle snow , at least, should fall on his house.

NixX posted the following today (Dec. 2, 2013)

I tried to get out into the snow this weekend but it didn't work out the way I'd have liked. It stayed warm until today so I had to climb a FS road from the pass to find some rained on snow. Long story short, I still liked the way it behaved, no problems steering, but it wasn't the test we are all waiting for. It was slow trails in deep snow. Not the compact snow and ice at 25-45 mph. Ideally I could fine an empty parkinglot with a few inches of snow and wail on it, but no dice.

I did manage to tear my bumper off while playing around. Backing up actually. I tried breaking trail on a small off-shoot trail (worked great, I could stop and start on the hill at will). I got off line while backing down it and caught the bumper on the inside of the passenger wheel well on a stouter-than-it-looked tree branch. I heard a thwack and my bumper was lying in front of me on the snow. That being siad I've wheeled for a long time on the stock bumper and its paid the price. I know I've pulled some of the mounting holes out before, this was just all at once.

Oh well, time to get it in for that custom bumper I've been talking about...

I guess there won't be any new info. for a while. I'll copy it here if/when I get it.

These are also available for first gen Xterras - I read several reviews of people driving in winter and everyone speaks well of them.

They are not a typical mechanical locker - the wheels can independently turn faster without locking, but won't stop driving. Sort of the reverse of a detroit locker (as I understand it). This allows the outer wheel run faster then the inner wheel during a turn, so turning radius is not compromised as severely as with a detriot or air locker.

Sooo I have ordered one. Does anyone have experience installing a locker?

Were you able to get the deal, despite it being a 1st gen and despite the date?

I'd like to myself, but the cash isn't there right now.

(I've never done anything with a differential, so I'm of no help. I wouldn't mind being there though, to learn something.)

Discount code still works, cost me $299 USD

They are back ordered at the moment so they told me it won't ship for a week from now.
