Canoe roof rack

Post by bruteforce08 »

It's been a long time since I've been to this site but my arse is back in an xterra! I'm on the hunt for a canoe rack for an 03. One could search for days online and not find what you're looking for. Any ideas or experience with something designed to hold a canoe rather than simply(or not so much) strapping it to the roof?

Welcome back!

If you have the factory cross bars, can't you tie them off on them?

There are special Kayak mounts by Thule and Yakima with easy load systems, they attach to load bars and basically universal for all models.
You can check Canoe Carriers & Kayak Racks at CARiD

I've been strapping it to the crossbars, even put an extra one on from my spare xterra, but it seems to move around a bit. More of a pet peeve than concern. I saw the ones from Thule, online, but not in person. I'm curious if they're worth the cash and if they still shift around.

They're not tight enough. There is a hex bolt you can tighten that should lock them in better.

The racks are tight. The canoe tends to shift because you can't properly strap the front.

I had my kayak on my xterra. I strapped it in the front and back. Also strapped it to the bars with a few straps. Was solid.

What I did with mine, which is a kayak, I installed bed extender and headache rack to safely secure it while driving.
