ARB Fridge/Freezer in Canada (pics added)

Over at Expedition Portal there is a sponsor called Sierra Expeditions. They are offering free shipping to the US as a promotion on the new ARB fridge/Freezer. So I contacted Wil, from Sierra Expeditions, and asked him how much shipping would be to Canada. He said that he would be willing to cut shipping to Canada in half, making shipping around $50 (since he doesn’t have the new box and weight in yet he can’t say exactly).

I then asked about duty, and he is going to look into it on Monday. The thing here is that USPS does not charge duty, but an item this large is likely beyond what USPS will ship. Therefore he would have to ship UPS, thus incurring a duty charge. And I hate paying duty on top of everything else.

In our discussion Wil mentioned that if he could ship three fridges or more he could avoid UPS thereby possibly avoiding duty charges and considerably lowering shipping costs.

I bring this to your attention in the case that anyone here might be interested in this fridge. I know that most will find the cost prohibitive, but I’m fed up with always trying to find ice and soggy bread. This fridge will freeze water, run for days without draining a single battery, and you never need ice again. This is a high quality item that draws between .7 and 2.5 amps per hour.

It is an Engel fridge for $899 CDN and has free shipping and would have no duty. This is my fallback, but I’d rather the ARB as it is a little bigger and seems a little more suited to my tastes.

Crap, I don't think I spent that much on my home fridge. I think for now I will opt for the $100 48ltr 12v coolitron for what I need. Warm 50 and cold beans never killed anyone.

What about getting it shipped to a drop location just across the border and driving it back over? Know anyone with a company that ships from the US to Canada regularly? Any US club members that could store a fridge or two for a while?

These are all good ideas but seem to turn into dead ends. Mostly because the cost of gas and my time to drive to the border and back removes most of the savings, plus if you don't know anyone at the border, and I don't, then you have to pay a company to hold it for you.
Every way I've looked at it, shipping here is the best way to do it.

There's a freight terminal about 30 min across the broder.

They charge a minimal fee, and give you 3 days from recipt of item before you are charged storage fee's

You should goad one of those lazy suckers out on the Peninsula to hold a meet of some sort. Like a "Wheelin' Wine Tour" or something. Then you could just hop over and hop back, and join the meet.

IF you want to beat the CBSA; mount it to the loadspace and fill it full of Canadian-made snacks and drinks while in the US... only if they get really inquisitive will anything bad happen at the border

Well, there is a bit about personal use, but I've also read posts about a guy getting nailed for putting a lift and wheels and tires on his jeep and coming back across.

I was thinking of that before... get skids, sliders, and lifts in the states, install it, and come back home...

It was a guy in Vancouver area, he went down to a fellow Jeeper's house in Washington, they spent the weekend putting on a lift, gears, wheels, tires, etc.

When he tried to cross back into Canada, they questioned him, and he (foolishly) had all the reciepts in the glove box. Just to be extra pricks, they charged him the duty, and fined him for trying to sneak it back.

The other move is to declare some of your stuff. Like this guy could have declared the wheels and tires, and probably been o.k. on the rest.

Also depends on where you cross. The 1000 islands bridge is pretty weaksause vs. Buffalo/Niagara, and if you cross south of Montreal, there is one of those honour-system gates just off the highway.

I think the time and effort to head down to the border plus gas is just not worth it to me. I'll probably just have it shipped up.

There are bunches of them in the manitoba/sask/northern ontario area, probably Alberta abd BC too, o.k., all along the border.

Anywho, last time I was here:

There was a railroad-style gate, and a CB microphone in a box. You call into the building and tell them if you have anything to declare. The really remote ones don't have a building. You pick up a courtesy telephone and call into a not-anywhere-near-you border agent. You tell them what you are up to, and continue about your business.

Why would anyone wait in line at the border when you can get off one or two exits earlier and just jog over a road or two and do that?
