New recall - steering

Just caught part of a report on the radio about a recall involving the steering of Frontiers and Xterras. It didn't give any specifics. A quick google came up with the following...maybe not the best source but good for now
"Nissan recently discovered that in certain rare instances, the lower steering column joint on the affected Frontier and Xterra vehicles can develop corrosion that limits the movement of the joint," the firm said in a statement.
The affected vehicles were built at plants in Tennessee and Brazil between 2001 and 2008.

Sometime in December they are suppose to be ready to do the work...time to book time with Milton Nissan...support the Dealer that supports the site.

In December, Nissan will be conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign on approximately 600,000 Model Year 2002-04 Frontier and Xterra vehicles. In certain rare instances, the lower steering column joint can develop corrosion that limits the movement of the joint. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, it may, in an extreme case, lead to cracking of the steering shaft.
This recall was prompted by 3 field reports from Canada, and 6 from Brazil. There are no field reports of this issue in the United States or other affected markets. No crashes or injuries have been associated with this issue.
Additional details will be provided to you by mid-December. Until that time, any steering column repairs should be completed in accordance with the existing service manual procedures.

I'm curious how those of us with Bl's will be affected by this recall. As in, will Nissan even look at my truck?

Well, that's kind of a joke question, eh? It has a big Ottawa Senators sticker on the back window, and you're concerned about the BL?

Man, you're crazy!!!!

For your information, the Sens sticker was replaced with a larger CNTC sticker 2 years ago.

And the question was serious. Those of us with a body lift have either extended the steering shaft as part of the kit from AC, or simply extended the linkage.

Seeing as this recall affects the steering linkages in the column, it's a legitimate question in my mind, because having a body lift could potentially negate our ability to get this warranty work done.

if the part is physically modified in any way, in short, no, no way to do the recall.

If the shaft is intact, and there's really no difference in replacing the part if the lift was there or not, I don't see why we won't be able to do it.

Lets wait till it's officially released, and see exactly what's being done, and a decision can be made at that time.

Well seeing as this affects me I should pay attention to what comes out on this in the future.

Thanks for the heads up.

My boss sent me this link this morning

The joint and shaft will be replaced on about 303,000 Nissan Frontier trucks and 283,000 Xterra SUVs, Nissan said. About 85 per cent of the vehicles recalled are in the United States.

The affected cars were manufactured at Nissan's plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, between July 2001 and January 2005 and at its Curitiba, Brazil, plant from November 2001 to June 2008.

If you check that plaque on the door there, it should state the month and year your car was manufactured. I'm not sure if the dealership looks at this or just simple runs the VIN number to see if it is part of the recall.

usually when they come out with a recall like this, it's because they've identified a certain "lot" of parts were not made to specifications, due to incidents, or failures. They've done testing, and determined ones before, and/or after were made fine, and they know what vin# range those parts went in.

And likely the trucks produced in July 2001 was for the 2002 model year (unless I got a Brazilian version lol)

My '01 was built 09/00. So I would suspect any truck in July 2001 would be a 2002 model (by the time it leaves the factory and makes its way to the dealer).
