Chains have a nasty habit of breaking.yazza wrote:Why not use chains?
Really, there's nothing wrong with using a chain. The problem is that - in general - people use a lower grade chain than is necessary for the pull, and then they snap on it, which can happen at any time. A low grade chain plus a yank is a bad thing. The combination of the two practices causes a lot of problems. On top of that, it's easier to store a good tow-strap than a chain. Tow-straps are lighter in weight. The weight of the chain to pull your vehicle vs. the weight of a tow-strap is amazingly different. And - in general - a tow-strap is easier to work with.

This kid came over the hill way too fast, was cut off by a lady who was not looking, and he ended up in the snowbank in front of my house. No problem. Grabbed my strap and we got him out with a little bit of work.

Yeah, I have cable, probably will for 1 more season before switching it out. Though that's a concern, there are others. The brake mechanism in the winch can also fail, which can be quite expensive.

Yeah - i get the problems, Simon. I just threw it out there. Probably not the best idea, but I've done it in a pinch...
I did drag out a VW Jetta yesterday when visiting Goderich. It's nice to be helpful. People really appreciate it.

Goderich sure gets its fair share of snow, I grew up near there. I pulled a Jetta out of some heavy snow once, pulling from the rear tow hook and the snow got under the front and ripped the front bumper cover off. Interesting watching someone try to put the bumper cover in the trunk....
