Which muffler is best?

Post by Morpheus »

So I need to replace the muffler on the X, and I want a nice sounding one, but not a muffler that sounds "ricey"

I don't want my truck to sound like a honda civic.

I've always been a fan of flowmaster, but it's always been on a V8, not a v6.

Looking for opinions.

I've looked on youtube, but the videos aren't a good representation of sound through the microphone.

Simon, Nige, and Drew all have great sounding trucks. Not too loud, but vibrant.

Maybe they can chime in. My exhaust is going to blow pretty soon. Keeping that factory stuff on as long as I can. So, I am also interested in what the word will be on the question.

I've got a nismo on the 4.0 and I'm on the fence for something new. Sounds a tad civicy for me.

Mine's leaking at the seam, not in a panic to replace it tomorrow or anything, but it's gonna need one eventually.

I am in the market for one as well, mine is in bad shape. I've read a lot of glowing praise for gibson on various forums, but haven't heard it myself.

A friend of mine has the gibson on his pathfinder and I thought it sounded pretty nice. Not ricey at all.

mine was a flowmaster 50 series. it was nice, but it had a weird twang to it when you got above 4K, but that might have been the heat shields on the cat. it wasn't very durable though, it rusted out in less than 6 years. It split where the end is welded to the body and also where the hanger is welded to the end. it was only 80 bucks so i don't think i did that bad

If I wanted something that was durable, i would have got stainless. right now i have whatever speedy muffler installed for $180 and it's so quiet, the snorkel drowns out the exhaust. I didn't notice any difference in power but i don't really care about that at this point

Mine's a Dynomax muffler. Sounds okay. I haven't looked over the piping much, but I know the tailpipe is about 2" and has been rerouted. The piping going into the muffler, I believe, is stock.

I was thinking of ordering the nismo exhaust from AC, but it's gone off their website now. The only spot I can find it is with a header package.

They're now selling the gibson cat/back exhaust.

I don't really need a complete cat/back, so I think I'll just buy a muffler locally, just need to decide on which one.

I need to replace mine soon. What's the link for AC?

I had a Raven muffler once on a v8...solid and sounded like the flowmaster 50 series.

Kinda hard to say which is better as most are designed for v8. It might just come down to what's available where you shop and the best price.

Well, I'll weigh in on this one. I have the Magnaflow and have had it since my muffler did the same as yours is doing Mike, split at the seam. My Magna is about 5 years old now, and I've loved it since the day I put it on. Nice deep sound for a cat- back exhaust.

It sounds a bit raspier now that I have headers and a full SS set-up front to back, with hi-flow cats, but I still like it. It's just louder now, that's all.

Although this won't be an issue for you Mike, the way the tail-pipe is run, it can come in contact with a spare tire if it's tucked underneath. I had a 32" spare underneath for a bit, and it scorched the tire where it had been rubbing against it.

AND, the tail pipe has somewhat of a soupcan look to it, being that it somewhat over-sized. Ask Jay about that one, he's seen mine, and thought fit to make fun ot it.

AND, the angle of the tailpipe is not the greatest on a 3+2 lifted truck. When I did the SS exhaust, I had them rotate the tailpipe about 45 degrees up, so that it is now tucked up close to the rear bumperette.

I have a Magnaflow universal with the stock pipe - It sounds a little louder than stock around town and on the highway, but, towing a trailer - the droning, eee gads the droning - wife thought we needed a new muffler right after I put it on. :)
