New Rear Leafs

Despite Jay's advice to buy a new truck I am looking for some new parts for my rear. Sadly Nissan parts are pricey. A check at 4x4parts came up with a set. With all the pieces it will be about $400 (without delivery and duties).

Frontier Heavy Duty Rear Lift Leaf Pack $297.02CAD (gives 1" lift over stock)

Would need new U-bolts, and thought a nice 2" block lift would do well:

Now the tougher decisions...bushing and shackles...which ones?

There are 3 different bushing kits depending on the size of the front leaf bolt; 12mm, 14mm or 18mm. Anyone have an idea what the size is? The 18mm are polyurethane bushings.

Woah. Why'd Jay say to sell the truck? Can't just be the leafs. What else is up that needs a look at?

All things can be fixed. And sometimes it's not the $, but the time invested on R&D.

But I want to know why the Bender said dump it. He's a pretty smart guy.... What's he all concerned about?

Next: Why would you order leafs from the states and pay all that shipping when you can just go to a decent leaf shop here and get the truck put together in a day? There's some good guys in the hood. I'm not understanding your approach. Just asking, Ron, not trying to be an a-hole.

Third: You have a 3" lift kit that I sold you. Yeah, it's a PITA, that's why you got it so cheap. Why would you get all wound up on a 2" when you have the 3" sitting there costing nothing?

Oh boy! Re-read the first post. I didn't say he said to sell it. I said he said to buy a new one but it is all in jest...geesh, Engrish majors :lol:

Number of reasons. Leaf shops = time from work to wait for them to do it. Order it and it is here and can be done on my schedule. A few leaf shops I've been too that have relatively convenient schedules only re-arch the spring, they can't make a new set. Price wise this is really good.

I know you are not a math major but 1" spring lift + 2" lift from blocks (or shackles) = 3" lift + 3" body lift = 6" total lift in the rear :p

As for not visiting, art class is over this time around. So no reason to cruise your metropolis. Plus winter outside = I dont wanna hang out in the cold (why are we never invited inside? hiding bodies? :D).

New art class coming up with warmer weather = hang out :D Better yet come over and help install new springs.

Stay away from the blocks. They're a BS method of lifting. Get an AAL kit, and a decent shackle. You'll also need longer shocks in the rear once you're done the lift, or you'll top out the travel very easily.

Thanks Simon for the needed feedback and thanks to those who blessed the purchase <rolleyes>

The lift block idea is tossed out the window (I actually thought a little block lift was better than longer shackles...learn something new)

I will look at the adjustable shackles...recommendations?

I can get the longer shocks locally so not an immediate priority but yet they are on the list. Wanted to get the parts ordered.

Anyone know the size of the front leaf bolt? I might have to ask AC if the bushing they recommend work with the springs the sell. You would think the bushing kit would come with the right sized bolts, no?

If ordering that much from the US it may be worth it to save on shipping and duties to have them shipped just scross the border and pick them up on Saturday morning like I did with my exhaust stuff a couple of weeks ago. The downside is you will spend a Saturday morning in your car / truck and the gas depending on the vehicle you take.

Are your leafs broken? or just saggy? Curiosity more than anything.

I would but if time weren't an issue I would have them made up here.

I don't think the leafs are broken but they are saggy. AAL would just hide the real problem..worn springs. Re-arch old springs does not last and then there is the matter of scheduling and getting into the shop to get it done. Ordering new and having it delivered gives me the chance to get to it when schedule permits.

I know I have to pay a bit more for cross-border but that is the price to pay for more convenience ;)

So any recommendations on the points above?

About the front leaf bolt, AC replied that you need to order the correct size based on what is in there already.

Hmmm, how do you measure it without taking it apart???

Make a call to the dealer or a trusted parts store. There is more to a bolt then it's size and often the right part isn't much more expensive then the "this fits".

I agree with shackles and leafs over blocks. Blocks lead to axle hop :stickwack:
