Bender-built rebuild

Post by medic »

After many seasons of rust and painting over them, I've finally removed my Bender-built (R) sliders.

I've got my angle grinder ready, some primer, and a top coat.

Still debating as to what the top coat should be, either bed liner or rocker guard.

Any suggestions??

(ps) Jay - when you painted them originally, did you use a red primer?

I've used the spray on bedliner from canadian tire, it gives a good finish.

It adds an extra step tho, prime, paint, then use bedliner.

I made the mistake the first time of trying to use the bedliner to also cover the primer. You have to be patient and do many thin coats with lots of dry time between

Make sure it's "self etching" primer. It makes the world of difference.

Paint isn't a big deal, just don't buy the cheapest can you see, even tremclad will work

OK:

Grind - Prime (self etching) - Paint - Bed Liner

I've also picked up some 3M Non-Slip tape to put on the top for getting in and out. I start in about an hour so I'll post pics throughout (i know this is a pic needy place)

Using the bedliner, you don't really need the tape, but you can always try it after.

What kind of wheel are you using? I find the flap disc grinding wheels work the best for this kinda thing, took me only 2 hours to do most of my frame.

Yeah, run out to CT or wherever and grab some flap discs. They are great for this kind of thing.

Princess Auto ones are cheap, but they work well too..

the sliders are 99% stripped. There are some areas that I can't get to and to be honest, after 6 hrs of grinding, i no longer give a rats a$$. Plus my garage has been destroyed!

I'm going to give them an alcohol (isopropyl) wipe and then prime them. As long as they last me the next 5 years or so, I'll be happy.

pics coming soon

The amount of dust this project generated was enormous. I look like a coal miner now!

Looking good though.

Looks good so far, I hope you were wearing a mask! That looks nasty.

Also, an afterthought, I saw that they had gravity fed sandblasters at PA. I think I might grab one for these types of jobs. They are only $25

I wasn't for the first little bit. Ended up having balck snots and been coughing ever since.

The mask I was wearing by the end was completely black!

2 coats of flat black enamel were put on last night. Letting it cure overnight before I put 2 coats of bed-liner. By tomorrow afternoon, should be back on the X.

F@#$!!!

Woke up this AM wanting to put on the bed-liner only to find the sliders soaked in morning dew. I'm going to let them bake in the sun to dry before starting anything more.

I hope this doesn't affect the end state.

The end is almost near. The sliders baked all afternoon in the sun. They now have 2 coats each of primer, enamel paint, and bed liner.

All that is left is to turn them over, sand the pads that they were laying on, paint those and strap them back on.

Primed pads waiting about 2 hours before being painted.
