Pathy Question

I was looking at used Pathfinders and Frontiers on Auto Trader for a future project truck (probably just a pipe dream). If it was to happen what years did the Pathfinder have a full frame? And are there certain years/options to avoid in the Pathfinder? Frontier?

The full frame Pathfinders were from 87-95, then again from 05+. The 05+ should be avoided, simply because they have independant suspension front and back.

With the WD21 (87-95) Pathys, look for frame rust. That's the #1 killer of these things. Tap around with a hammer to check it out, especially over the rear wheels.

I've heard that the earlier models (87-90) were better than the later ones, as Nissan switched steel suppliers around that time. The later ones can take quite a bit of work to keep the frame strong enough to handle the stresses of offroading.

With the Frontiers, they're basically the same as the 00-04 Xterras. Same suspension, motor, tranny, everything.

Two things to watch for when buying a frontier (and xterra). First is a cracked exhaust manifold (mine is cracked on the passenger side). With the SC version watch for cracks in the blower housing (mine is not SC so can only relate from a person who had a SC version). Otherwise I love my truck :woot:

One other thing to look for are the shields on the 4 cats. They like to rust off and either fall off or just sit there rattling away. More annoyance than anything unless you drive over a shield that has fallen off (they are pretty thick).

Thanks I'll narrow my search and make sure to perform a thorough frame and engine inspection, if I ever go through with it.

Check for broken tie rod ends if you look at a 91. lol.
J/k. I only had mine snap because I was doing my best Clark Kent imitation that day.

Seriously though if I hadn't been T-boned I would still be driving this. You'll be very happy with it.

Started this thread about trucks seen for sale after spotting two at one dealer.
