OEM Sunroof

Post by studum »

Does anyone out there have the OEM pop-up sunroof? I'm curious as to what the size of the stock one is.

I'm 90% sure I want to cut a hole in my roof and drop in a universal this year, it's the one thing that I REALLY miss having in my dd. If I can do it for less than $200 I'm doing it for sure, and will be doing it as soon as spring weather returns to enjoy it all summer.

I wonder if you could scavenge one from a wrecker, weather stripping and all...

This is what I want to try and do first. Has to be a universal one though, I won't be able to throw in an OEM one. Universals are just clamped onto the roof with an inner ring and sealed with silicone.

Thanks X-kid I appreciate it.

They are universal across the pathys, hardbody's and frontiers.

There is one in good shape at the pick-n-pull on a pathy here in Ottawa.

Not sure you will find a universal in a junk yard. Never seen one before. You will very likely have to buy a new one. Though you might find a used one online, but expect to still pay good money for it.

I am curious to know why? Not challenging, I just don't know the reason.

He would have to weld an OEM one in place. They do not bolt in. They are not made to be a drop in as the hole in the roof is die formed because of the drain gutter on the inside.

This is why.

The OEM units are built to sit in a trough that is built into the roof itself from the factory. The seal is at roof level and the trough has drains.

Aftermarket units come with a frame that clamps onto the roof skin and is completely self contained. The seal is above roof level and no trough / drains are needed.

Aftermarket electric units usually contain their own built in trough system that has to be connected and drain lines installed similar to OEM.

I want an aftermarket pop-up one for simplicity. Cut a hole (after measuring about 50 times), seal the perimiter, drop in the top frame / glass, then tighten the clamping ring on the inside and it's done.

My first car had one of these universal manual ones in it, and it was what got me addicted to sunroof's lol. I used to pop the whole thing out and throw it in the trunk all the time. This is my first vehicle ever without one and I'm itching really hard to put one in.

From looking around, a new pop up one should be about $300 all in. Just don't want to spend that much. A new one second hand should be about $100-$150. A used one should be $50-$100. To get one from the junker's it would have to be a pick and pull yard and I'd have to walk around until I saw one. Remove the clamp ring from inside and break the silicone seal from the frame to the roof and it should be good to go.

I have a pick and pull yard kind of close to me I can walk around and scope out. It's just a matter of how much the yard would ask for one vs buying one, I have yet to call ahead.

I found a brand new unit on kijiji for $100 but he's east of Toronto and is only willing to meet me in Scarborough, doubting it's worth the time and gas for that trip to get it. I'm tempted to get new or like new in box just to make sure the seals are good from the get go.

I like your thinking on going new, for the exact reason that you mentioned, the seals will be fresh and would be one less thing to worry about.

Ya, the guy I'm talking to seems pretty good. His pics are clear and there's no BS about him. The sunroof is clearly brand new (no wear at all on it) and the seals and hardware are shown in sealed plastic bags. The roof is 17"x31" so pretty close to stock.

I may steal the wifey's car and drive down this weekend to grab it off of him. $20-$30 in gas may be worth it... He's in Oshawa, but I guess is visiting someone in the east end on Saturday.

Decisions decisions...

I'm not afraid to use good used parts at all, but I'm kind of afraid of damaging a good sunroof while trying to carefully un-install one in the yard at the junkers. Worst part I think would be trying to separate the top frame from the roof with the silicone sealant all over it (if it was installed properly to begin with...)

Yeah, I don't know how easy it would be to reuse a sunroof. You're better off buying new, and $100 doesn't sound bad.

Cool thing about the aftermarket sunroof - you can remove the ENTIRE sunroof! Not this 2" opening and inability to remove the entire piece of glass. Perhaps they thought someone would fall out of the sunroof while wheeling...

You can remove the entire glass in the OEM one. Just unlock the handle and when it is open all the way (90 degree position), slide it sideways and the entire piece of glass comes out. No tools needed. Great thing to have in case your truck is surrounded by zombies and you can't get out through the doors.

The problem on the xterra though is I think the wind faring blocks the glass from going all the way up to 90 degrees.

Another good reason not to buy an xterra ;-)

My fairing is already off :-)

Just trying to find a time when I can steal the wife's car to meet up with the guy. Hopefully he's still got it when I can.

Princess auto might have a cheap one to buy.

I think this would work as your next mod. No tools needed!
