Spring Over Axle?

Post by Nd4SpdSe »

Well, I know of changing the suspension layout from axle under to axle over to gain lift, it's not something I hear done a lot with the exemtion of those doing a SAS. Is there a major downside or draw back which is why most don't go this route?

I did a SOA on my 2nd gen X. The main downfall that might happen is axle wrap. I haven't experienced this yet and I hope I don't have to. Also you will get a lot of lift and it requires some custom fab. Here is the link to my suspension build page:

Yup, like Draconian stated, the main issue is Axle wrap, which is why with a SAS, it's not that big of a deal, especially if the rear suspension is changed to a 3 or 4-link set-up. The links end up stabilizing the axle a bit more then a leaf pack does.

Are you contemplating doing a spring over to gain some lift?

Spring Over Axle?

Axle wrap should not happen under normal driving, but if you drive the rig in the winter, you might have problems.

Without the support of a 4 link, if you experience any loss of traction, it can get really bad.

A soa swap usually isnt a good idea without a sas, because you will get more lift than you can accomplish with the front end.

Cousin gave me the idea. He wants to do the suspension lift on my truck while I'm in AB, but my leafs are in Ontario, so he could do the front, but not the rear.
