Military-Wrap Rear Leaf Sample

Post by Nd4SpdSe »

Been trying to get my leaf springs sorted out to be able to do my list over the last few months. After one coming in wrong, causing a delay of several more weeks, he finally got one in for a sample. Unfortunately it's back in Ontario, so I want to give the Yay so I can get it for my Xmas leave (3 week turn around, but my leave starts in 2 weeks, for 3 weeks)

Looking on some input, to see if anything needs to change, comments and/or suggestions

Who are you using? We are having a hell of a time getting new packs built for a GM 2500. The only place in Kingston seems to be Bension, and their asking a fortune, anyone else who could do it uses the same supplier as Bension, which is out of Montreal.

I'm going through Pyett Springs in Stoney Creek, he was recommded by my mechanic, but to our surprise, he's not the one doing them. It's by a place in Montreal that he's going through. Price on the springs is $48/each to give you an idea.

i've heard great things about birchmount springs in scarborough (through the landcruiser community). they do anything leaf spring related (and more) and have been in the biz for many many years.

Sgt_B had a custom pack made for him from some place in Alberta. I'll see if I can get the name of the place. You call them up and give them your dimensions and weight requirements, and they build them and ship them out.

Nope, a pair of course. This is just a prototype. Need to make sure it's ok before they make another. I asked him for the inner and outter diameter of the looped section, make sure it's ok for wrapping the stock leaf.

Are they going to be set up for a 3inch lift?

Somewhere around there I guess. Just seems that lifts aren't an exact science, especially with leaf springs. I've got a set of SLR UCA's for the front and Revolver shackles for the rear, low pro bump stops, new torsion bars, etc, etc. Just missing longer rear brake lines and the rear leafs to have all the parts and (finally) get the lift done.

There's actually very little information in people using military-wrap leafs, especially in off-roading, even amungst the Jeepers, so kinda treading new ground with this. Not affraid to put money where my ideas are and trying to prove some concepts along with the benefits of that style spring:

- 2 primary leafs meaning if one snaps, you're not stuck/stranded, especially on the trail
- Less sag over time
- Stiffer rear for better on-road handling (especially for having no rear sway bar)
- Better load handling/sag before relying on the overload leaf
- Although concerns of restricting flex (although I want to say it'll be minimal with the revolvers), should gain more when flexing where the the overload leaf would normally be used (by removing said leaf)

I think Greg at PRG has offered Military-Wrap leaf "Racing" packs ion the past for the Frontier and the Titan. If you can get him on the phone, always a busy guy, he may have some insights for you.

Awesome, Rather if he's that busy, I sent him an email so he can respond at his convinience.

I do not work on any of the first gen stuff at all. But the military wrap is super common when a performance leaf is required (racing) but you wont find many rock crawlers running that type of part since it cost more and generally crawler guys go for the cheapest stuff around. My 2 cents...ditch the Ranchos and get a quality shock (bilstein 5100 or better ...not the 5150 though) and then get a custom spring with a bunch of free arch and get rid of those revolver shackles.....if there is no spring pressure pushing the axle down (like when the revolver is unfolded) you have no traction on that tire. Talk to Deaver or some other high-end spring builder...they will set you up with the correct springs.

I can vouch for the Deaver spring packs, Nismojunky can as well.

As for the revolvers, I see Greg's point but I also remember he is "focused" on California-Arizona style dessert running. For you keeping the contact patch "in contact" may (is) more important then sending power through that wheel. There is a similar argument for the shocks, Greg builds and sells products to be BEAT ON. He would never sell a "white bodied shock", they're all the same and they're all crap for his application. Your application is different, as is mine and my SAWs are amazing shocks at speed and when really pushed however they are too stiff for "crawling" and over-dampened for day to day driving.

Military wrap is the better, but more expensive route, I think everyone (Greg included) will agree on that.

Greg's application:
