Peter Cheney and I talk...

Post by Scotto »

I'm not sure you all know who Peter Cheney is, but he writes for the Globe, in the auto section, and currently owns a Lotus. Very impressive car. He's a gear head. Over the past two years, he and I have bantered a bit, and we have developed a level of respect for each other. He speaks of driving at high speeds, and understanding how a vehicle performs. I respond with maneuvering a vehicle over a trail. I also question his observations on what a good driver is. And he has said, "OK - I get that." It's the difference between driving at 240km/h and going 5km/h and getting thru weird stuff. All is good.

Today, at the end of the auto-show in Toronto, I spotted a pic of him and his Lotus (on FB), and casually said, "I'll trade a ride in your car for a trail run in mine."

He said, "You're on!"

He's serious. He'll take me to a track in his Lotus, but I have to take him on a trail.

I need the best group of us (no more than six trucks) to run a trail. I'm thinking Bob C cause it's fun and has all the stuff for a fun run.

This is going to be great!

Wow! Awesome! I would sign up but I am not ready for Bob C. Would still love to meet up with you when you go for a run on the track.

What Lotus does he have? A Super 7, Elise, Exige? I love their cars and principles.

Do you think you will fit in one of them?

Friend in the UK has a small stable of them and took me for a country jaunt in his Super 7. Lifting a front wheel in the turns. Their roads are different from ours in that there are no shoulders and brush/trees grow right to the edge of the pavement. Made for a fun night drive.

Man, I'd love to hit the track against a Lotus in the 8. It should probably take me, but I'd still like to see how she stacks up. I'd love to be there for both actually, heh

You'll note how he said "the best group of us" - sounds as if it will be an invite-only hand-picking scenario. NOT to imply that you don't fit the bill - just an observation... ;)

That's so cool! Wish I could whip a lotus around a track! So is this going to be a hand picking of whos coming on that run? :D

It's not about getting "the best" (poor choice of words) but assembling a group that might prove for great fodder for a write-up, if he chose to write an article. As you all know, the larger the group, the slower and more difficult the run becomes. Five trucks, maybe six is tops. Trying not to make this into a weird, elitist event will be tricky.

People who lead the club ought to be represented. A nice selection of trucks, with different things having been modded. My math says that leaves 4 more spaces, max. That's not very many. Obviously it can't be a first come/first serve sign-up. I don't know - but I don't want this to become some sort of grade school "I didn't get to go to Melissa's birthday party" thing. I thought about keeping the whole thing quiet, but that seemed to me - and it still does - as if I were running around behind people's backs, and speaks of cliques and snobbery. This isn't about the cool kids vs the geeky kids. And it's not so much hand-picked as a nice run with a guest.

I certainly hope that the run happens, and am keeping my fingers crossed, but you never know.

A good write up about the trucks, 4-wheeling (responsibly) and the club would be the best outcome (aside from having some fun). I too hope this happens!

We all know Scott is not into the elitist thing. I know my truck is not ready for Bob C or I would sign-up...yellow truck and all!

I would just love to run with the group...can I be a TB?

I, for one, think you'll do your best to pick a good cross section to represent our ilk. I agree with Snafu(Ron) a good write up would be the optimal outcome. The whole adventure is in good hands. On a more personal note, I promise I won't be TOO derogatory when I'm one of the kids still at the fence. You bastard... :D

Great job on making contact and developing a relationship with this guy!
I would really like to be considered for this run. I know the trail well and have done it solo as well as with groups many times.

Nice work! If you want to teach him about 4 hour long recoveries, (which, as we all know, is the greatest part of what we do) I'd be happy to come along.

Hopefully this run happens. It would be interesting to see an article. You should make a new thread when you have decide a date and time and see who's interested. Then choose from that list of people.
