Wheel chocks/blocks?

Post by Rhino »

I'm thinking of acquiring a set of wheel chocks (or blocks if you prefer) for my 2007 XTerra. I don't envision doing any serious wrenching, lacking both a space to work and much mechanical ability, but I could imagine having to change a tire due to a flat. The manual strongly recommends having a pair of chocks handy for that situation.

Crappy Tire has a few different ones:

I'm leaning toward the foldable pair for just $24.99 because they have good reviews and the price is reasonable but the ones that $15.99 seem to be specifically designed for trucks so would I be better off getting those? I am running 16 inch wheels so maybe the foldable ones are meant for smaller vehicles?? Mind you, both claim to have a two ton capacity. The XTerra actually weights 4400 pounds, which is a bit OVER 2 tons but that doesn't mean I need to go for an even heavier-duty chock that the $15.99 chocks does it?

By the way, I am open to buying from other stores; I just looked at Crappy Tire first because they have lots of automotive stuff. If you can suggest a better store and/or chocks, that would be fine.

See SAE J348, or a general rule of thumb for small diameter wheels is a chock height of 1/4 the wheel/tire height.

I wouldn't trust a folding chock unless it has been certified to a standard or signed off by a competent engineer.

A cheap/junk yard option:

These are OEM for many GM trucks, many that come with at least 31" wheels. The pair are metal, nest for storage, and have small cleats to dig into the dirt. These would not be ideal for very soft dirt or mud though. Many live their life in the truck having been never used.

For a 39" you're a ~11" chock as the ratio changes for larger radius wheels, or are you only a 37" which would be a 10".

I've seen chocks much taller than that in mining applications.

So that sounds like about the height of a leaf then is correct.
