WTF was that?

Post by Snafu »

We all know the usual noises and vibrations our trucks make whether it is from a pot-hole or taking a turn. I have run into a noise that I cannot figure out nor repeat.

The wife was driving the truck the previous week and she mentioned that there was a bang. She was driving over 80 at the time and thought it was like the front drive engaging.

I took the truck this week and drove about 700 km. I tried hard/soft acceleration/deceleration, downshifting automatically and manually. Nothing could repeat a noise that I have not heard before or what would be considered to be a bang. Then it happened. I was just cruising around 90 and there was a loud enough bang that made me think WTF? The truck did not react to it like pull to one side or slow down. All was normal. The sound was like something hitting the frame with enough force (like a 2 lb mallet hitting the frame but not quite so metallic but not as loud as a torsion bar going).

During the 6 days that I have driven it, the sound only occurred once. I cannot repeat it and simply waiting to hear it again to try and locate the source.

I hope to get under the truck this weekend and make sure the bolts/nuts for the suspension are tight.

I only bring it up in case anyone else has run into this or something similar to let me know so I can check.

Thanks

Do you have a mechanical auto locker in the rear?

I don't think it was a backfire but possible. You would think it would happen more often.

No mechanical locker. Just the LSD.

I was thinking a gremlin but with all the water under there I don't think it would survive.

It's possible something in the LSD is binding up and then unloading. Or perhaps a something wrong with the spiders in the front. Is it a gear driven LSD, or clutch pack driven?

Not sure which type of LSD in the rear.

I was thinking that it is something is binding up then unloading but can't get it to repeat to see if I can locate the sound.

Possibly but there isn't the typical clunk when going in and out of gear.

Usually you know what the noise is and can reproduce it. This is puzzling.

When it happened the one time with me I did not feel anything.

Check the rear suspension today and all was tight.

I have been driving in2wd the passes couple of days. If the weather holds I will keep it in 2we to see if the sound happens and maybe isolate it to the front

Also your tire pressures and condition.
Dissimilar diameters can make diffs/drivelines pop.

In 2wd for a while and no unsuspecting noises so far. So wondering if it is related to the front.

I think it is the LSD doing that. There is a lesser known clunk sound with these trucks that occurs when cruising on the hwy. It feels like a mix of the traction control grabbing and stepping on the accelerator. It seems to occur if you go a constant speed for a while and then let go of the gas or give it a bit more gas. I have experienced it 3 times, all on the hwy in the winter on snowy days. That being said the road was clear so it wasn't a slip. It would be impossible to reproduce in a test drive so I didn't even bother taking it up with Nissan.

I have not had it happen since. I have been mostly in 2wd. Not worried about it too much. It is one of those 'WTF was that?' sounds.

I do have a couple of loose sway bar links but it does not sound like that. Have newish ones to put in.

You probably just hit a racoon or skunk. That's what happens when you live out in the boonies.
